Adaptation period?

I wondered, is this a known thing? Say a person has lived their life eating subpar foods... Instant noodles, crisps, chocolate, white bread, sugary cereals, frozen pizza etc. Then, they switch immediately to a typical healthy diet: whole grains, nuts, fresh meat and vegetables, healthy fats, reduced intake of trans fats and sugar etc. Would their body be so adapted to extracting nutrition from the original food type that there could be a period - a week, month or longer - where they feel worse despite eating superior foods?

Answer

The thing that will need to adapt is your gut biome. If you suddenly change from a terrible, highly processed diet to one with all the right stuff, your guts are going be a very chaotic place for a few weeks.

Change gradually, stock up on air freshener, and be prepared to apologise to anyone share a confined space with.

Answer

Yup! You might feel a bit off with tummy troubles or tiredness. That’s just your body getting used to the new food and where it’s getting its energy from. If you ate a lot of junk before, you might even feel some withdrawal symptoms.
