ADHD prevented me from fasting

I very recently got diagnosed as an adult with ADHD and started a new medication. I used to think about food all the time. Like literally all the time. Not even junk food or even just eating food, but also thinking about what recipes I would like to make, researching meal prep (and then never actually meal prepping). I spent so much of my mental energy every day on this. My doctor said my meds might also help with this since it could be an impulse control issue/wandering brain. Well, since starting the meds I don't have those thoughts anymore. I wake up really early for work, and it's not until much later in the day I think "I should have lunch". Fasting is now possible for me :) Discretionary note: my meds also have a known side affect to potentially reduce appetite that may also be at play, but I used to have those thoughts without even being hungry.

This is exactly what happened to me. I could fast, but it was much, much more difficult. I felt like I constantly thought about food and planned for meals whether I was hungry or not. It’s nice to be able to go through the day without thinking so much about it! (also this post reminded me to take my meds so thanks lol)

I’m happy for you that you are able to start your weight loss journey. You should monitor much closely when, what and how much you are eating if your appetite might be affected by your medication. You can do this! I wish you good luck!

many doctors don’t understand the add brain very well. there are generally two kinds of focus- not really engaged, and the focus flits from here to there constantly, or really engaged, and something is in hyperfocus that’s like a laser. Sounds like you may have had a hyperfocus on food? The meds can create a hyperfocus situation on whatever you’re focused on when they kick in. Sounds like that’s productive for work right now, which can be very good! Most add meds reduce appetite in people with typical brain chemistry, but they don’t affect people with add the same way at all. Many doctors don’t get their head around how people with add can fall right asleep taking something that would keep other people buzzing for a couple days. Pay attention to how you work and find your superpowers!
