Anxiety and IF

Hey everyone, I started IF about three weeks ago. I am doing 16/8 and lost 5 lbs quickly. I want to lose 5 more but am ok where I am now (I was already down 5 lbs from regular dietary changes) Anyway, I like that IF is so simple and that my energy level is high unless I over eat during my window. I don’t like how much anxiety I feel in my body. It’s not specific thoughts. It’s like my body feels spring-loaded constantly. I forget to breathe, my movements are more spastic, I have started almost stuttering (I start a sentence and then restart it.) I’ve tried getting more sleep, adding a protein shake during my window, doing some exercise in the morning, and eating some nuts after 14 hours instead of waiting until 16. Nothing has helped . Does anyone have any suggestions for what I could try next?

Hi! I know one of the common side effects of IF is anxiety due to lowered blood sugar levels or increased adrenaline. But I would also ask you if your anxiety could also perhaps be psychological. Are you finding IF a stressful process because it’s so different and uncomfortable if we’re not yet used to it? It could also be your body’s way of saying hmm something’s not right here.. usually we receive food on a much more regular basis than this. Is something wrong? Are we in danger?

Once your body adjusts and recognises that it’s NOT in danger and you are safe.. it will no longer feel the need to release a stress response. Unfortunately this might be one of those situations where we have to patiently wait for the anxiety to pass because the more we try to fight against it and bring it down, usually the worse it gets. The anxiety WILL pass. Mine passed after a couple of months or so. Keep doing what you’re doing, keep smashing it!

Are you sure diet and fasting is causing anxiety? I’d think long and hard as to what stressors you may be facing. Additionally maybe decrease caffeine intake and since you feel spring loaded maybe try some additional exercise, even just walking a mile or two may be enough to bring down your anxiety. I’ve dealt with anxiety on and off for 16 years, getting to bed earlier and adopting healthier habits have helped immensely to manage it.
