Any downside to regularly consuming bouillons?

Some people enjoy evening tea, I enjoy a chicken or beef bouillon cube in hot water. I was wondering how healthy or unhealthy would consuming one a day be. \- The salt content: about half of it is salt, but is that an issue for a healthy individual? \- Where the chicken/beef is sourced: is that a concern for well-known brands, like Knorr? \- Anything else I must be mindful of?

Answer

There are many commenters here referring to the increased risk of cardio vascular events with respect to increasing salt consumption, and it is true that is (still) the standard medical advice. However, the evidentiary basis for that advice is not definitive. I would direct interested readers to Dr. Jason Fung (a Canadian nephrologist, i.e. kidney specialist) and this article (he also has some youtube presentations on the subject): https://www.dietdoctor.com/the-truth-about-salt

Answer

Everything in moderation is the key. If I were you I’d take a look at my diet and see what my overall average weekly sodium intake is - if it’s too much, Id make adjustments.

Make sure your sodium intake is under control, and balance it with a healthy amount of potassium in your diet (sources include bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes, lentils, spinach and kale). Potassium lowers blood pressure so it counteracts the effects of too much sodium. Avoid supplements (excess potassium in the body is no joke).

I think you know the answer. These are very high in sodium. It’s hard to be specific without knowing what you are drinking, but it’s very easy to calculate the recommended daily intake.

I used to do this is a kid, so I get the attraction but strongly recommend against it. High salt diets are correlated to increased cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension etc over the long term. As an added bonus high salt intake in the short-term is also a problem and gives hypernatraemia causing electrolyte disturbance.

They are ultra processed foods? Do they have other additives? Then the answer is they are harmful.

You can make bone broth yourself. It’s the real thing, an elixir of life full of nutrients, and you get to control the amount of salt in it.

Answer

I drink bouillon broth quite regularly. It’s actually recommended if you’re in nutritional ketosis to meet the daily sodium requirements. On a normal diet you would probably be more mindful but most fears about sodium are a bit exaggerated for healthy individuals.

I’m of the idea that your body tells you when and if you need more salt. At least it did for me when I started keto, never used much salt before, a few days on a keto diet and my salt taste changed completely pushing me to add way more salt than before to my meals.
