Anyone actually consult a doctor before doing a fast over 72 hr?

I know I don’t have diabetes, I’m currently in a 72hr fast rn. I feel fine. Do I NEEED to consult my doctor before trying for longer? Or is it just “hey if you feel bad, maybe you should eat if you’re already over the keto flu part of the fast”. I’m only asking cause I just don’t have time with work and everything atm. It’ll be a couple weeks before I can get in.

Answer

Ive done 5 and haven’t considered talking to a dr. Everyone is different of course. Pay attention to your body and it’s signals and if something seems off, end your fast and try again. At least. That’s been my method.

So for most people short fasts will not cause the body to get out of homeostasis. However if you have issues with kidneys, liver , pancreas ect your body can react horribly. Many people don’t know they have issues until they get an adverse advent I’ve seen people come into the hospital with huge electrolyte imbalances that are often the result of poor nutrition over series of days/weeks. I’ve had many pts who have Ed’s come in due to fasting(in these cases literal starvation). It’s always good to consult a dr to a) run a base line blood/electrolytes panel and b) keep them in the loop about your health. There’s some drs the are absolutely opposed others that are not and more and more that are coming up with solutions to work with pts a big thing I’ve seen lately has been the increased prescription of ozempic and other meds like it for weight lose. I think for longer fasts you 100% should consult your dr.

Every time I read blogs on fasting or anything related to health for that matter they always tell you to consult your doctor for some reason. I don’t know if it’s a conspiracy or something but I can’t seem to be allowed to change even the brand of paper I use to wipe my bum without a doctor’s say so. 😀

There’s really no need if you are feeling fine in my opinnion.

Haha, my wife forced me to made me consult a doctor after day 5 of an Achilles tendon rupture. I hate going to medical doctors for some reason.

I mean technically some of the dudes I work with have PhDs so I guess I did.

My doctor just educated me on what happens scientifically to my body leaning towards more of the complications but didn’t seem to be overly concerned ( I mentioned doing an 18,14, 12, 5, 3 days fast and that I have done it a few times *obviously* he recommends what I mentioned what I have been doing when not fasting, Omad vegan ( put used words more like lots of protein, good fats, low carbs or cycle between low and no carb days and eating at a 10-20% calorie deficit. he also mentioned that he has high hopes for me because i have pushed great results in 2.5 months ( down 60lb with fasting, walking, gym, eating clean and calorie deficit on non fasting days) ( i have a chronic illness #TakeAWildGuess but mentioned that there are reports of people reversing it with diet and exercise and getting back to normal weight. it is on paper from research rare but the number may be very much higher that is not reported, although some people just dont have the luck because it genes, they can be skinny 18 healthy athletic and boom hit with the big Dtype2 ) anyways hope you all liked this little rant about my doctor visit, they know it works but cant really reccommend it but can deffinantly be happy for the results and the healthy journey of making them only see you once a year
