At a weird cross roads-to broth or not to broth

I am taking up water fasting again after quite a bit of time off and because I’m dumb I thought I could do it without preparing electrolytes(in the process of moving and my food scale broke, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS.) So I’m only 45 hours into what I thought would be a 7 day fast, and I feel like shit (no surprise there) I have headaches, shaky, cranky, you know the drill. In the past, I have felt completely better when I drank some broth but I know technically that would end the fast. Is it wrong to drink some broth to get me through to give me the salt and continue fasting correctly with electrolytes in my water afterwards or should I just fully re-feed and try again some other time? I also have a midterm on Thursday so I’m stressed about still being in the shitty feeling phase and not in the mental focus superpower phase of the fast lol. Thank you!!

Answer

Its not a big deal to drink a little broth. even if it has a few calories, you’ll burn through them quickly. doing a 100% ‘pure’ fast is overrated. you can put a little bit of salt in water as well if you really don’t wanna risk it.

If you’re feeling bad, break. No sense in suffering just because. 45 hours is good and progress no matter how you look at it and doing something like broth into another fast is perfectly fine. Heck, breaking and refeeding until you’re ready post-Thursday is fine, too. Fasting is as flexible as you want it to be

Personally, though, I would start with some salt in your palm (about the size of a quarter), put it down with some water and see if things come back around in 10-15 minutes. If it is electrolytes, that might actually sort you feeling poorly. If you’re fasting for more than just weight loss, I can understand your want to keep the fast on so try that and see if it helps

A cup of broth doesn’t break a fast, unless your only goal is autophagy then noone can tell. I prefer broth over electrolytes since a week. Soo yum and it helps instantly.

I also put a bit of salt in my coffee.

If you read old posts on this sub by searching for “broth” you’ll see that a number of people use broth while fasting. It’s so much easier for me as snake juice makes me sick but somehow I can tolerate very salty broth. Of course I get my magnesium and potassium from other sources. I am not going to sweat a few calories when the broth is what allows me to stick to my (dirty) fast.
