Can’t Sleep While Fasting

I’ve been doing water and electrolyte fasts and the common issue I’m having is I just don’t get sleep or good sleep at all. This lasts the whole length of my fast, whether it’s one or four nights. I don’t normally have sleeping issues, so I don’t really know what to do. Normally melatonin puts me right to sleep. On a day I’m fasting, it never does. Any advice? Is this common? Thanks in advance!!

Answer

Yes, fasting lifts adrenaline. That is why you are more mentally keen when fasting rather than lethargic. I tend to be bright all day, and half awake at night. Still plenty of energy, even with less sleep. Just gotta get used to it

Answer

try a cold shower, sounds weird but it does lower body temp, I found I run hotter on a fast, tried the cold showers which I did when I was exercising before bed and works a charm all n equals 1 though. good luck.

The quality of my sleep is great but I definitely need noticeably less sleep. Where normally I can sleep 7-8 hours, after 24+ hr(s) of water fasting I can’t go past 5-6 hours. Sometimes even less. Good thing is that I feel fine so my body must be getting the rest it needs.

Answer

best thing i do is just tire myself out, and sleep in a very cold room. I really only get 5hrs of sleep from that but i do feel rested afterwards and i also take naps every now and then in the morning which gives me roughly 8 hrs of total sleep. Melatonin never really worked for me too. Also, always turn off the lights, almost pitch black.

I’m actually up reading this because I couldn’t sleep. And I’m only 33+ hours in! I went to bed at 10pm, woke up at 12:39am, and it’s now 5:38am. This always happens when I fast, and it sucks because I absolutely love sleep. 😁

I highly recommend light exercise ca. 3 hours before sleep, for example a few kilometre walk should help calm your body and mind down! Or even Yoga!

And i find it super important to have extra good sleep routines/hygiene while fasting, what i do is breathing exercises to calm my body down and tell it that it’s ok to sleep even tho i’m on high alert, I turn on red LED lights that calm my brain, turn on my fan for white noise, then i just chill on my phone watching or reading non stimulating stuff until my eyes start getting tired and bam! magic! works every time!

I tried using ashwagandha pills to lower my cortisol as my sleep was so restless and my dreams too intense. It seemed to help as now that I’ve run out of that I’m having trouble sleeping and fasting again.

Answer

Not sure if this will help, but magnesium should help relax the muscles, on top of just being part of the electrolytes we need during long fasts. I got the citrate kind, and down 2 before sleep. (careful about the intake, since this kind can also be used as a laxative)

I do have to say, it’s really a matter of getting used to it. Even when I do all the things to induce sleep, I still wake up and sleep less during fasts. I started about 2 months ago and still have to get used to it.
