Clarification on whether I can be classified as IF

I've been eating one 700-1000Kcal meal a day between the hours of 12pm-4pm for the last 4-5 months. 27/m SW:270lbs CW:238lbs, GW:220lbs My friends seem split between telling me I have an ED or just telling me I've been fasting. The ones telling me I've given myself an ED seem really concerned about me and I think if I can label it IF it would help them get peace of mind. My plan is to hit 200lbs then resume a more typical diet and bulk up to 220lbs with muscle. I don't feel fatigued or particularly bothered for any sort of nutrients as it stands, so I don't believe I'm doing anything harmful. Do you guys think what I'm doing is IF and can I slap that label on it?

Answer

Look I don’t know you, your life, or circumstances, but I agree with your friends that this is disordered eating.

Slapping an intermittent fasting label on it doesn’t change that you’ve been eating under daily recommended minimums for months. This has a number of health implications from malnourishment to eating up a lot of muscle mass, just making losing harder in the long run. Especially given your size, you should not be eating that little for over that long.

Technically you are fasting, call it that if you want. The real problem isn’t the one meal a day thing though, it’s the very small amount of food. I’m not a doctor but you’re probably in danger of lots of different kinds of deficits at this level. To be honest though this isn’t a great forum for getting advice. You should consult a doctor in the first instance to check your physical and mental health are ok.

I see the danger of hitting low metabolism and weight loss coming to grinding halt with this low calories soon. This is starvation diet. Healthy IF is 500-800 below TDEE and never below 1200 calories.

There is a fast 800 diet where they do keto like diet for Max 3 months. Looks like you have done something similar to that. But i wouldn’t continue this for long if i were you.

Or may be u hit some kind of sweet spot where u are getting benefits of water fasting with ur diet but I feel like you are pushing it …

Greys anatomy (a series so i m not sure how reliable it is) had 2 episodes where a young lady had osteoporosis due to severe dieting and another big lady had heart muscles become too weak due to being in starvation mode due to dieting. 🤷🏻 It is just a series but it scared me 🤷🏻

Answer

This is not medical advice of course but for your height and the fact that you’re a male you should probably bump your calories up to between 1600 and 1800 calories per day. And in your non fasting hours have two meals instead of one. That may get your metabolism going again. I think that your goal weight for your height is a realistic goal.

Answer

If you have fat to lose then your body will just use your fat for energy/calories rather than food if you are fasting - not eating for a period of time - which it sounds like you are. When people talk about problems with your metabolism in a calorie deficit, that’s if you eat too few calories in multiple meals throughout the day and never get into the fat adapted state where you’re burning fat for fuel. If you’re fat adapted, you stop feeling hungry during fasts because your body gets good at switching over to using fat. If you feel good then I say continue… I’m not a doctor but this is how I understand things from the books I have read, like Dr. Fung’s.

Edit to also say when you eat your meal, eat until you are full. Don’t try to limit your calories. Make sure you feel fully fed, with preferably whole foods

Answer

You have plenty of calories to burn for fuel in your fat. If you’re fat adapted then you’re not running on 1,000 calories a day. Your body isn’t going to starve itself to death. Our bodies evolved to be able to use fat for fuel when access to food was limited and our ancestors did not eat 3 meals a day plus snacks at regular intervals. They might be lucky to find a few berries one day or they might go a few days before finding something they could eat. Don’t worry about all the haters. Read the obesity code by Dr. Fung, articles by Dr. Attia, etc. and educate yourself on IF. A lot of people come to it by accident and just because you didn’t consciously realize that’s what you were doing, doesn’t mean you have an ED.
