Coffee: a crutch I want to get rid of

Hi everyone, I'm like a lot of people. I really enjoy my morning coffee. I only have a cup a day. It's a rare day I have two and then I regret it because it's harder to sleep at night... My caffeine tolerance isn't very high! I know lots of people fast and include coffee and that's fine, but for me personally I'd like to try to get rid of it. I think it messes with me and maybe makes my cravings worse. My first time fasting with salts I didn't have any coffee and it felt great but ever since I haven't been able to let it go and it's a bit of a mental block for me at this point. Like a comforting morning ritual. Maybe I drink some hot water with lemon? Anyway, I know I just need to cold turkey it but wanted to share. Anyone else out there trying to kick the coffee on their water fasts? Any tricks or tips or ways to think about it so I can just stop this thing I do in the morning? Replace with some other ritual?

Answer

I am trying to cut out coffee too. I am unable to go cold turkey because I get terrible withdrawal headaches, so I am doing a gradual daily decrease and substituting with some decaf. You can check out r/decaf and r/nocaf for more help/tips. Good luck!

Black tea!! It’s still caffeinated and it’s a great replacement. I love coffee as much as you and I also can only have one to two cups a day but I’ve been able to go days without it, first by replacing it with black tea and then by just avoiding all fluids in the morning.

Just came here to say that I need to cut out caffeine as well. I’ve been getting the worst sleep and waking up in the middle of dreams constantly. Cannot remember the last time I slept through the night without remembering dreams. Starting to become extremely frustrating and not setting me up for a great day.

I’ve cut coffee out a few times and when I do it cold turkey, I have a terrible headache the first day but then I’m fine after that. I’d recommend doing it on a Sunday or something where you don’t need to get up early (for work) or need that caffeine punch. Plus you can go to bed early or nap if the headache is very bad.

Best of luck!

I was such a huge coffee addict, most of my life, from mid-teens on. I quit when pregnant and suffered through, but other than those few times, I’ve had coffee every day of my life, and usually a quart or more of it.

I could not drink it hot and black though. So when I tried fasting the first time, I switched to iced. I don’t know why exactly, but it’s much more tolerable cold and black. However I discovered that if I watered it down, it was even better cold, so I started diluting it, first by half, and then gradually more and more. I got to a point where I was putting maybe a quarter cup of the pot I brewed for my husband in a big mug, and then adding water and ice to that, replenishing the water through out the day and stringing the coffee dilution out over that time, occasionally topping off with a little cold coffee left in the pot. Then I did that less and less and used less and less and one morning, woke up to realize I didn’t need it anymore.

It is amazingly freeing to have the same energy, and not dreading those headaches when you can’t have a cup “on time”. I haven’t noticed missing the ritual of drinking because I’m drinking so much water. I’m not sure what will happen when the weather turns cold again though, because I did really rely on coffee for that first morning warmth on a cold day.
