Coffee and fasting

Let me preface by saying I do not like black coffee. I tend to have my coffee on the sweeter side. I cut coffee out about 2 or 3 weeks ago to do an extended water fast. But I do want to start drinking coffee again. I plan to do an OMAD/low carb diet. Is it possible to have the coffee and still see results ?

Answer

My hot take is you probably would like black coffee if you drank a good roast. Most coffee sucks black because it is sour because it is not good quality but if you experiment enough with premium brands, local roasts, fresh beans, different brew settings, you may be able to fit black coffee into your life and not sorry about the sweetener debate.

In late 2019/early 2020 I switched to black coffee with cafe bustelo esspresso made with a metal filter to get rid of the paper taste. Ever since I prefer black coffee over sweetened coffee 366 days of the year. :)

If the only results your looking for is weight loss, yes you will still see desirable results. However if you’re seeking benefits from a keto state or autophagy like treating insulin resistance or something, not so much, it’s not as straight forward and sweeteners tend to be counterproductive.

Last week I completed a six day fast, while drinking acv with lime juice and electrolytes , green tea, water and coffee with whipping cream, I lost 10.2 pounds. I felt I could of carried on but had ordered shopping for Saturday, I’m eating till next Sunday and then doing another six day fast.I guess each one of us are different so it will be trial and error to see what works for you. Keep the faith and carry on! Happy fasting 🥸

Answer

I have coffee with cream and sugar and really it’s not a big deal. The thing I think about is…it’s not something I plan to do for a short time, fasting is part of my lifestyle. And if that means I modify it slightly then it’s easier for me. I wouldn’t look at fasting as a short term fix. Good luck.

Answer

The only way I can see this working is if your OMAD is at the same time as you drink your coffee. This way you will only have one insulin spike during the day.

Otherwise, you will keep your insulin high throughout the day, and won’t ever switch to using fat as primary fuel.

I would also recommend reading about fasting before jumping in.

Answer

What type of coffee are you drinking? I used to drink instant and had to add sugar but if you use good quality beans it makes a big difference to the taste.

On days I eat i’ll have 2 flat whites with double shots of espresso, experiment and see what results you get and if your progress is slow its something you can remove.

Answer

I removed the sugar slowly. first 3 tsp of sugar than a week later 2 then 1 then .5 and then 0… As for milk, i still use it. If i get really good coffee i can away with not putting milk in. If you like heavy cream, that would be a better replacement, as some have said here…

If your goal of fasting is weight loss, i think a bit of milk will not do much damage. If it is more serious health things… then it might have an effect, idk.

Answer

If coffee with milk/sweetener once a day is the only thing you’re eating you’re still on an extremely low calorie OMAD fast and will get the weight loss benefits at bare minimum (unless you have like a gallon of milk with your coffee). If you’re using skim milk and non-nutrative sweeteners you might even avoid triggering insulin response but that’s a long shot. Either way, there’s a lot of benefits from fasting that will still take place even with small feedings. Autophagy probably not but you might still see the reduction in ghrelin, increase in HGH, overall reduction in insulin levels, etc. I’d imagine you’d still get most of the reduced insulin resistance benefits because OMAD has similar results for insulin resistance even with full meals.

tl;dr it’s your journey, take the ride your way. Unless you’re on an extremely strict fast for autophagy benefits or diabetes reversal, I wouldn’t sweat things like that too much. Especially if the goal is just simple weight loss. The benefits of caloric restriction over time vastly outweigh any negatives caused by some creamer in the morning.

You can do anything you want.

1st consideration is how fast do you want to lose weight? You can drink coffee with cream but it will slow your weight loss down because your body will consume the calories in the cream 1st before moving to consuming body fat.

2nd does you body respond well to dairy? One way to tell is to check your glucose before drinking coffe with cream, then check an hour later and 2 hours later, if your glucose remains elevated two hours after you drink cofee with cream, cream is not your bodies friend.

You get to chose how fast you want to lose weight and how quickly you want to heal. And what you can tolerate

In my journey I initially had coffee with cream because it assisted me in fasting longer. After a time I dropped into expresso which did the trick for morning fasting.

Now, as my body and tastes have change I drink water with ACV 1st thing in the morning and salt under my tongue.

Do what you need to do and do what you can tolerate and be willing to flex as your bodies tastes change.

Enjoy the journey. Fast on!

Answer

You could try flavored coffee, maybe. I use Dunkin Donuts flavors coffee. My favorite is their vanilla and their blueberry muffin flavor when I can find it. Is it the same as adding delicious creamers? No. 😂 But it’s hot, it tastes far better than normal black coffee, it has the needed caffeine, and I don’t have to question whether I’m going to pull myself out of whatever benefits I’ve achieved from fasting.
