Comfort eating

Hi, I had a major surgery a week and a half ago Whare I had a brain tumor removed and I’ve just been eating non stop afterwards. I haven’t been hungry at all but I keep eating. I’m 100% sure this is comfort eating and not caused by medications. How can I stop? I am so stuffed but can’t stop. I need new alternatives to cope, Healthy food Dosent relax me or work the same way. So that’s another way I know it’s emotional. Does anyone know good coping mechanisms to switch out ? Things like going for walks and exercise haven’t helped me. Neither has distractions like TVs or movies

Answer

You should tell your doctor this. I don’t know what kind of tumor or where it was, but there are parts of your brain that control for appetite, but also for decision making, emotional regulation, etc, that may have been affected by the tumor or surgery, and could be contributing to this. Your body is slso healing and telling you to eat more calories in order to support the healing process. Perhaps if you get the all clear from your doctor you might consider some counseling to help address the comfort aspect? Eating for comfort is something many of us struggle with so you aren’t alone

Answer

Eat high protein, high saturated fat, and high fiber meals. They will fill you up so much that eating anything else will be uncomfortable.

A chicken fettuccine Alfredo with homemade Alfredo sauce, made with real butter and heavy whipping cream, will sit so heavy that you’ll be disinclined to eat. You can add a salad with real olive oil for the fiber.

Avoid vegetable oils - they blunt the satiety signal and lead to over eating

Answer

I think if it’s not medically related, you’re got to pull up your basic will power.

Decide what and when you want eat, make sure that food is prepared at the time you’ve decided and eat only when you’ve scheduled it.

If it’s not time to eat, you’re just not allowed. Remind yourself how awful you feel when you eat to the point of being stuffed.

Throw out all the foods you have no control over, chips, popcorn, whatever your nemesis is. Plan on drinking water or tea between meals. Anything that goes in your mouth, let it be planned.

And last, if you listen to books on tape, listen to inspirational people. Let what you’re getting out of eating, a sense of fullness, come from other areas of your life.

Glad you’re on the other side of that brain tumor!

Answer

If the change is significant it could be related to the surgery and you need to pass it on to your doctor. Of course you might be eating more to recover from the surgery but it may also be physiology related.
