I read many things about prolonged fasting (7-10 days) but was not able to be sure if it really increases chance of gallstones. Many reputable sources say yes because gallbladder's contractions are less, but I also saw a study in which researchers concluded that 10 to 20 hours of fasting increased the lithogenic index of bile, but prolonged fasting 4-6 days decreased it, decreasing cholesterol concentration in the gallbladder by a whopping 30%. Of course, I know one study doesn't make us able to make a conclusion.
What I wanted to know is if somebody knows if electrolytes during a fast can help decrease gallbladder risks, maybe stimulating bowel movements (it often happens to me).
I got no other significant risk factors for gallstones, in fact apparently most significant are obesity, rapid weight loss, female sex, use of oral contraceptives IIRC and familiar history.
Is it safe to do a prolonged water fast once in a while, like twice a year, or should I add to the possibilities the serious chance of developing gallstones?
Edit1: Here's the link to the study http://www.jlr.org/content/17/3/211.full.pdf
I know we cannot rely on just one study, but it sounds to me quite a bit of a reassurance, at least for relatively short water fasts (I don't think I'll ever want go past 10 days, and I generally stay around 8)
Edit2: I read some other studies that found that a fasting around 10-15 hours increase cholesterol saturation in gallbladder, while 20 hours and beyond tend to decrease it. I have to add that I think other studies found that a prolonged fast increased that saturation, so exactly the opposite (as it often happens in science)
Edit3: It should also be added that cholesterol saturation in the gallbladder is not the only factor which contributes to stones formation
Answer
Christ that was a tough read.
So some people had a 30-50% reduction in cholesterol in their blood … so less bile was processed…so there was a back up of bile? Whew. Happy news for cholesterol, bad news for bile.I mean, extra salt will make you poop/diarrhea, but I don’t think it’s stimulating your gallbladder to release digestive juices/bile. Two different things.
PS - totally not related - but my husband’s doctor got kidney stones after doing a 7 day fast. Not sure why.
