Drinks

Starting up intermittent fasting again and I have a question that I never really considered the last time I was into it. I want to preface this with \*I love water\*. I drink a lot of water. However, I also like flavored drinks. I've cut out regular sodas, fruit drinks, etc. in the past, but I'm wondering what the take is on Zero drinks (ie. gatorade, energy drinks, sodas) as a drink outside the feeding window. If they're zero calorie/sugar but have other ingredients like one carb, etc. will this be something to avoid outside the window? Thanks for your input!

Answer

Sugar free sweetness SHOULD be avoided. That said, you need to pick your battles. If having sugar free sweetened drinks helps navigate the fast, then so be it. Manage the diabetes, weight, or other more pressing issues, and tackle things like Whole Foods rather than processed and artificial sweeteners in turn.
If you try to start out doing everything the chances of long term success are diminished. Take an evolving approach and chances of success are enhanced.

My reverse-engineered answer is “yes”. My body is fast-adjusted, and I do not normally consume “zero” drinks. However there was one occasion recently where I had a Diet Coke and felt terrible —heartburn, stomach ache, etc., and that’s a sign to me that something isn’t super IF compatible.

Since getting into IF I have come to view my digestive system as a muscle, and base how I eat on whether or not it’s “causing injury or pain” to the muscle, as opposed to caloric content. Starchy carbs, sugar, processed foods and alcohol also cause a similar effect. I don’t know about the science of zero drinks, but I would guess they break fast based on how they feel to consume in a fast-adjusted state.

Answer

I can’t live without my coffee

Answer

Black coffe, black tea and water if you truely wish to intermittent fast.

You can certainly drink these but then you are just skipping meals, which isn’t a bad thing, after all its all about CICO - but if you are drinking anything else you are not IF.

Answer

Do what works best for you. I drink water with zero calorie enhancers like Mio and I’m doing just fine. I love Gatorade Propel as a every once in a while thing which is also zero calories. I love herbal and green teas with a little zero calorie Stevia that doesn’t break s fast. Diet Soda is still soda at the end of the day so I avoid it completely lol. Gatekeepers will tell you to drink ONLY plain water and black coffee for all eternity and you’ll burn yourself out from misery 😄
