Fasting and Training

Started a full effort intermittent fasting in April 2021. Started at 215, got down to 183 by end of October '21. Mostly OMAD with some 16:8. After Oct, I kept with a 16:8 regular schedule. I haven't weighed myself since October until a few days ago. I am at 186. I just went by how my clothes were fitting. I have started strength training and cycling. As Fung says, exercise makes you hungry. This is very true for me. I would like to train about 100+ miles per week on the bike and still do my intense, but short strength training. I would also like to get down to 175. Does anyone have an experience with IF but also being able to train hard? I can't go keto because wife and kids won't want to do it and I can't be "that guy". Any expressed life experience in this matter is appreciated.

Answer

No idea about weight lifting, but I cycle about 300km strenuously every week in a fasted (18ish hours) state. Doesn’t feel quite as good as cycling in a fed state, but it’s not a big difference either.

Answer

Not very helpful….but I found that longer runs were difficult when I ran completely fasted (calorie deficit and running after 12-14 hrs of fasting). Got the weight off though…. now I’m trying to maintain and have increased calories the night before my morning runs and it is easier! Have put 3lbs back on but I figured that was an ok trade off

Answer

Medium training is doable. When training hard, IF goes straight out the window and rapid weight gain ensues.

So I pick exercises very selectively these days, carefully avoiding things like squats and deadlifts. Hopefully I can get to a metabolic level one day, where I can do them again.

Answer

Long bike rides are no problem fasted if you are riding in Z2 or Z3. If you are doing more intense work - intervals, lots of climbing you might need to fuel (I would). Phil Maffetone is good to read on Z2 training and fuelling
