Fasting Tolerance As We Age?

Hello hello, I'm not new to fasting, but I'm wanting to make it a more consistent habit in my life. Fasting used to be a "quick fix" for me when I felt I couldn't control the food I ate. Fast forward several years of therapy later... As a 30 something, fasting fits into my plan for a reasonable life. However, I'm seeing setbacks I never did as a kid. Persistent heartburn, headaches, dizziness, brain fog...yes I'm on supplements. No I no longer have 2 energy drinks a day. So my question is: can a person's tolerance for fasting change as we age? What are your experiences?

Answer

I’ll be 40 this year.

I began fasting for religious reasons in my late teens, and continued for weight maintenance in my 20s, for general health in my 30s.

At this point, the first 2 days are harder now than they were when I was 20, but EVERYTHING about my body is harder now than when I was 20.

After the 36 hour adjustment into ketosis, though, fasting is much easier now than then. Once I’m fasting, i just am fasting until i am ready to quit. A decade ago i was counting the minutes, dreaming of my next meal. At this age, I expect my next meal will be waiting when I get there, no rush, it’s not even on my mind. I don’t get the fasting insomnia now, either, which i remember being a thing when i was young.

I’m a 48 year old woman. I started with 16 hour fasts maybe 2-3 years ago. I worked up to 20, then 24, 30, 36, 48. Now I do a 60 hour fast once a week. It’s easier as my body gets used to it. Electrolytes definitely help; I like the LMNT brand. Good luck!

I’m 30. Compared to 25, it’s a lot easier. Not that that’s a huge age gap, at all. The healthier i am the easier it becomes. That’s what i notice. Doing fasting close to periods that i eat chocolates and chips and alcohol, ain’t helping.

Answer

I think it’s easier when you’re older.

I’m 46, when I was under 30 I would get so ravenously hungry I wouldn’t have skipped breakfast. Now I never get hungry like I used to, it requires no effort to not eat before noon.
