First Fast

I am about to begin my first fast starting tomorrow. I plan to do this for at least 3 days. Do you have any suggestions for me as a first timer? (F/31/227)

Answer

If it’s your first fast ever, don’t shoot for 3 days. Try OMAD for a week then if you feel good about it move on to skipping food for a whole day (dinner one day and then breakfast or lunch 2 days after), then for 2 days, and finally for the 3 days you intended initially.

Answer

Start with electrolytes on day #1 (at least sodium), or you’ll risk feeling like garbage. Remember that hunger fades, there’s an ebb and flow, it doesn’t simply rise. Stick with water, sparking water (no sweeteners), coffee, and tea; sometimes having a hot cup at a ‘mealtime’ helps with the mental part. Prepare yourself for some insomnia, so establish and maintain a good nighttime routine (no caffeine for 8 hours, no screens for 1+ hours, etc.). When you feel hungry, picture your body eating away at the areas you want gone; sounds a little crazy, but I swear by it 😄 If you do get a headache, nausea, or dizziness, and salt doesn’t help within 30-60 minutes, or you actually throw up (or have palpitations, sweats, etc.), break your fast, nourish yourself, and start again another day.

And remember your ‘why.’ That’s going to be the most important tool to get you through.

Answer

  1. The first fast is the hardest, especially when it follows a phase of shitty eating, which is why people in this thread are advising you to try OMAD first. It’s not that you can’t fast safely right away, it’s just mentally tough to make a sharp transition like that.
  2. The second day of a fast is routinely the hardest - my understanding is that that’s because it’s when your body is making the shift to running all of its systems purely on your fat reserves. Regardless of the “why”, it’s very commonly reported. Strong probability that you’re going to wake up on day 3 feeling like you could go for a lot longer.
  3. Fasting isn’t supposed to be utterly miserable. You’re going to have moments of intense hunger, but they should fade within an hour or so, leaving you feeling just fine. You should not be spending most of your day unhappy or dizzy or weak, all of which are signs that you’re doing something wrong.

Answer

If you’re planning to cut out caffeine I’d do it several days before the fast begins. Caffeine withdrawal symptoms are really bad for some people. Lasted weeks for me.

Like many have said, 3 days might be a little ambitious unless you’ve already done some form of meal skipping, omad, psmf, very low carb etc. Good luck though and fasting gets easier with practice.. like anything else.
