First time fasting

This is my first time fasting and I've done it for 52 hours so far, hoping to make it to 7 days or 10 days. I've only had water, black coffee, green tea, sugarfree gum, salt water and multivitamin gummies. Do any of these things break your fast? Also any tips on how to be less physical weak and tired.

Answer

To some extent, you have to decide what breaks your fast and what doesn’t. There isn’t an International Fasting Committee to set the standards and give you a certificate if you did it right. Unless you’re fasting for an organized religion or something, I guess.

Artificial sweeteners in sugar-free gum may cause a minor insulin response in some people, which may slow down or slightly interrupt a fasting state. Personally I think, assuming a normal amount of usage, it’s highly unlikely to cause a significant difference in results.

Gummie medicine/supplements probably has macronutrients in it, they’re usually made with tapioca starch or something. This will certainly downregulate autophagy, but in the typical dose you would take, the speed bump would be so minor to be imperceptible.

The rest of the stuff is pretty standard.

Most important is how do you feel? You should be at the point of feeling pretty invincible now. How is energy? Mental clarity?

To add: with artificial sweeteners, the main thing that I worry about personally is that I’m just stringing along my taste for sweet foods and mental desire to eat them. For me, that’s enough to cut them out. A large part of fasting is mental, and some of the benefits are mental too.

Damn, that’s impressive. Good on you! Make sure you’re getting enough electrolytes like sodium, potassium and magnesium. As to what breaks your fast, the multivitamin gummy might TECHNICALLY break your fast if it has sugar. It’s up to you to decide whether to care or not. Ultimately, fasting isn’t some mythical state the body enters like ketosis. It’s just not eating hardly anything.

Answer

Take it one day at a time and don’t set yourself up for failure by challenging yourself to last 7 or 10 days.

52 hours is pretty amazing already. Maybe try to incorporate fasting into your lifestyle. The next fast will be easier and you’ll know what to expect.

I think you can make your fast a lot easier if you prepare it well. But if I remember well on my longer fast I started to get more energy around the 4th day. And I was back to full-energy by the 15th day.
