Foods to eat after a 50-72hour fast?

Hi. I tried my first ever fast with a target of 72hrs but ended up caving at 50hrs (figured 50 aint a bad start). Unfortunately i was so hungry i broke my fast with the nearest stuff i could find - 2 pastries (from delifrance) and a chicken mayo sandwich and washed it all down with a pepsi. I have read alot online that people should break fasts with super light foods initially like bone broth, cooked vegetables etc and slowly ease into eating normal food. I assumed this applied for more longer fasts (like 5 days or more?) and thought it would be fine to just eat whatever when i was done with 50hours. Its been 30mins since ive eaten, i feel fine. Should i be worried? Should i stick to bone broth next time as a go to break fast food?

Answer

Seconding bone broth.

If you jump into carbs and sugar, you might feel like you’re having a heart attack/anxiety attack followed by a feeling like you’re hung over. At least that’s how I feel.

If you read about how carbs affect your body, it makes sense.

I like straight up bone broth, very soft soup the next day (very well cooked vegetables and well cooked very small cubes of meat (usually chicken)), day 3 some soft meat and soft veggies, day 4 normal.

You have to remember to KEEP DRINKING. Sometimes when you go back to eating you stop drinking enough and don’t understand why you feel stiff, have a headache, get terrible muscle cramps, and want to eat everything.

Keep your hydration and electrolytes up.

Some people seem to fall in and out of 48ish hour fasts eating whatever, but I’m not one of the. YMMV.

I usually grab a small bowl of miso with a bit of garlic, spinach, green onion and tofu/chicken/white fish of some kind and half a teaspoon of coconut or toasted sesame oil.Eat that, wait 2-3 hours and then eat whatever I want.

I have an insanely finicky stomach that will erupt in diaster pants and an orchestra of tubas if I eat whatever I want after even a 38 hour fast.

Answer

I’ve read comments of people breaking extended fasts (10+ days) with extremely fatty/carby foods like burgers and fries and meats and they said they were completely fine after. So you eating whatever after 50 hours would be completely fine.

I just read the book Born to run, and it talks about a drink called Iskiate, which ancient american tribes would drink before exercise. Although not related to fasting, im experimenting while on a fast and its going well. Its just chia seeds in boiling water with lemon juice(and honey but i skip it)

Answer

I did a 5 day last week and broke it with half an avocado then an omelette like half an hour later. I used to go really slow and cautious but with the shorter extended fasts it seems to mostly be up to your own digestion

Congrats on 50 hours. Also congrats on just about the worst foods/drink to break it! Haha. You can only improve at this point! :)

I will get a rotisserie chicken and pick it apart fairly slowly and throw together a small salad with arugula, blueberries, feta cheese, yogurt, Greek olives; and a little olive oil. Seems to work ok. I don’t eat much. Ease into it.

Congrats on the 50, really nice.

There are better ways to end a fast, but recently I broke fasts of 60-70 hours with worse foods, and had no trouble at all. I imagine the longer the fast, the more careful you have to be. I don’t have experience with 5+ day fasts.

I’m sure starting with bone broth, later some veggies and an egg is better though. I found that I still tend to binge after a fast, so I think next time I’ll prepare broth and a small portion of veggies and chicken and break my fast during a long walk.

Answer

Did you feel sick after the pastries? If not then eat whatever you want. There’s no magic to it and fasting is not religion.

However if your objective is long term weight control you may want to consider starting with good habits after any successful fast.

That means not overindulging and eating responsibly (I.e. don’t start the day with a breakfast of donuts and liquid sugar). Unless you plan to make fasting a regular part of your lifestyle, binging or going back to “normal“ will cause you to gain weight almost as fast as you l lost it.

I give myself weekends to eat without thinking and either water fast or intermittent fast on keto during the week. But find what works for you.

And btw I strongly recommend quitting soda altogether or switching to diet. It’s one of the worst things you can put into your body and after some time not only won’t you miss it, but you might even find you actively dislike it. I tried regular coke at a barbecue this summer because we were out of zero, and I couldn’t finish it. You’ll find the same is true of other things. I actively dislike American sliced white bread for example.

Good luck and here’s to your next 50. 🍻

Answer

Depends entirely on your goals:

If you’re eating for weight loss I would suggest staying keto.

If you’re eating for health in general I would suggest beginning an elimination diet to determine what foods work best for you. Probably something like whole foods or keto.

I would however always stay away from processed sugars after a fast.
