Getting Started

Guidance requested! I'm currently in the military, have been for about 14 years now. As of three days ago, I'm 225 lbs, goal weight is 155 (I'm 5'6''). I've been steadily gaining weight since I joined, regardless of how much I exercised at any given time, even up to daily 2 hour long workouts. I went through a couple really rough patches with depression and what was probably functional alcholism, where I gained quite a bit of weight. Unfortunately, I'm a emotional and boredom eater. Really trying to get a handle on my back and forth sweet and salty cravings. Realistically, the only reason I'm still able to be in the military is because of recent changes in physical requirements. That being said, if Im not able to get within physical fitness standards (weight/tape measurements specifically) I will not be able to re-enlist, and will quietly let go in a couple years. I can't stand the thought of getting to 16 years in the military and not being able to finish out the 20 years required to retire and receive benefits. I finally decided to start fasting, first with IF, and now with some extended fasting. I'm going through some strange health issues (cycle related) so I was putting off regular IF, but I finally said fuckit, I need to start now or I never will. SO! I am currently on my second ever fast, my first being only 24 hours. So far I am 97 hours in. My plan is to eat tomorrow (in about 8 hours from now), and then start another fast of at least 24 hours. I have some bone broth mix to start, and then I'm thinking hard boiled eggs, and maybe sushi at some point. Can you tell I'm dreaming about food lol. I have yet to try working out while fasting, I wanted to get an idea of my energy levels first. Thus far I've been drinking tons of mio flavored water, as well as a twice daily dose of table salted water, or table salted coffee, as well as a few teaspoons of texas pete by itself when I really crave flavor. Please keep in mind I'm still fresh to the community, so I'm still learning the acronyms. Thank all of you for the progress pics that show me it can be done! Happy to be here and looking to learn a lot. Thanks!! Edit: edited for readbility as well! I made it 102 hours!! I started getting a bit dizzy (probably because I only had salt available instead of a proper blend of electrolytes based on what people are telling me), so I had a bone broth mix which is about 50 calories. In about two hours I'll have access to food again (military meal hours ) and I'll have something more substantial. Eggs are calling my name!!

Answer

Whoa, congrats on being over 90 hours! I took a break from fasting and had to ramp back up. I broke a 65 hour fast last night and while in the past I could break it any way I wanted, this time I found out what my stomach definitely doesn’t like and now I’m feeling it….ugh just ugh. So my recommendation is to take it easy when breaking longer fasts until you know what you can handle. Your digestive system will thank you. Good luck! 🍀
