How do you pick yourself up again after breaking fast for two days straight and overeating?

I have been doing IF since this year and while it has been going overall quite well, I have been struggling this week. Not only did I break my fast 4 days this week, I've also been binge eating until I felt sick. Suddenly, all I can think about is food and I have no more self control anymore. Motivation hit a new low and I don't know how to cheer myself up again.

Answer

Accept that you had a week-long break. I’ve had some weeks that were harder, too. It’s okay to take a break, sometimes. Do you have a cheat day? If not, you might need to build one in so you can make it long term (I need one, myself).

Now, move on, and pick back up where you left off. You haven’t failed until you give up.

Answer

This just means you need a break.

Give yourself permission and a timeline to get it out of your system and back on track.

The timeline is very important. Think about what’s going on with you and how long you need to work through it. A day? A week? Longer? Then give yourself permission to take a break from IF for that long, without beating yourself up over it. If it’s not forbidden, I think this could help with the binging also.Set a reasonable goal date for getting back to it, a deadline can help keep you from procrastinating.

Also, check to see if your getting proper nutrition. Do you need to take some vitamins? Perhaps this was triggered by a nutritional deficit of some sort.

This is just my personal opinion, I am not a professional or expert of any kind.

Motivation and discipline are VERY different animals. IF works well as long as you realize it’s about changing habits not only losing weight or getting healthier. Long term goals and such. Don’t feel so bad, you aren’t the only one suffering through this. When I get cravings I try to go for a walk, or down a glass of water, or jump on the treadmill. Break that cycle. You can do it!

I’m with you as I had two or three bad days last week. At the end of every day you have a chance to start again tomorrow.

Every morning you have a choice to make, and all you have to do is consistently make more good choices than bad ones. Good choices move you towards your goals, bad ones move you away. If you have no goals it doesn’t matter what choice you make…

Check things out after you’ve had your break and get back on the path again for a couple of days. In my world, the effect was only a couple of pounds gained. I know I can lose them, because I’ve already done it once this month.

Good luck on your journey.

Answer

I’m sorry to say (because I love fasting), that if you have a tendency to binge, IF is probably not for you. I know it’s gone well so far but you may have hit your limit.

You might want to try fasting windows that are shorter. Be very aware of ensuring high-fibre-content meals when you do eat. It’s okay to have 3 meals and no snacks! Be consistent and stick with whole food high fibre.

We all have different brain chemistry. Fasting can definitely mess you up. I was great with it for a long time, and now it’s a different story.
