How Noticeable is the Loss from Fasting

So I’m 5’5, about 147lbs, and a 20 year old female. I want to do a 14 day water fast (I’ve done several sets of 5 and definitely am up for the challenge). My concern is that if I lose too much weight too quickly, people will think I have an eating disorder and report me. So my question is this: how noticeable is the weight loss usually from a 14 day fast? I know a lot of it is water weight, and I’ve never noticed any weight loss on my 5 day fasts, so I’m just seeing if anyone has any thoughts. Thanks!!!

Answer

I can’t speak to a 14-day fast, but… I have lost some weight gradually over the past few months eating predominantly raw vegan and doing occasional 24-hour fasts. A couple of weeks ago I started eating OMAD… and yesterday I completed a 4-day fast. I would say the weight loss is pretty noticeable. I don’t have a scale, but I can now fist a fist lengthwise between me and my pants. I was a size eight, not sure what I would be now… looking on Instagram, YouTube, etc, I have seen that people can have dramatic weight loss from a 5-day fast alone.

I lost 17 lbs on my 14 day fast last year, and everyone kept asking me if I was okay. They even knew I was on a fast, but they couldn’t help but worrying about me. I’m a 5’11” male and went from 180 down to 163.

Just recently one of my closest friends said, “I’m glad you gained your weight back. You really didn’t look healthy for a while there after your fast.” It can be frustrating to get these comments, but I went into it ready for unwanted feedback. At the end of the day, it’s your body. Who cares what “they” think?

I finished a 12 days straight water (and electrolyte) only fast. 20 days total in past 30 days. I lost 8 lbs after i weighed myself first day of refeed 4 days ago. My bmi is 27.3 which is still overweight. 30 is obese.

8lbs after 20 days fasting.

8 . Pounds. 💀☠

You might not lose a lot of weight so just try it. Of course transitioning is best.

I’m subbed to this subreddit to educate myself on fasting. I fast 2 days per week, and every 3-4 months, I do a fasting-mimicking 5 day fast. I see some rather extreme fasts being talked about on here, and so far I’ve kept my opinions to myself, but I feel compelled to speak up now.

There are reasons to fast, and there are reasons not to. Fasting is great for resting the gut, rejuvenating organs and tissues, and re-educating the body on how to handle sugar. It is just ok for weight loss. The reason it is just ok is that the body adapts psychologically, behaviorally and physiologically to lowered food intake by lowering your basal metabolic rate. So, while you will lose weight, when you come out of a prolonged fast, your metabolism will be slower and it will be easier for you to gain weight again.

Since you are doing this to lose weight, just don’t. It’s not worth the risk that your metabolism may slow down long term, or even permanently.

Also, you are still young and growing. Your body needs nutrition. You risk malnutrition with such a prolonged fast.

If you are looking for ways to control your weight, consider the 5/2 fasting strategy. You eat normally for 5 days, and fast for two non-consecutive days out of the week. That way, your body doesn’t lower its metabolism. You will just shed some weight, and that’s it.

Good luck.
