IF + running

I tried IF for the first week of the year and was able to get into a pretty good routine - my eating window was 2:30 - 6:30pm and i’d do a half hour of yoga after i had eaten, typically at 5. However I am starting to train for a half marathon and don’t feel great about running outside having not eaten but also wanting to run mid-day (new england in the winter being dark and cold). am i okay to run on an empty stomach? should i push up my eating window?

Answer

I am a fair weather runner. Top out at 10k (normally 5k). But I have zero issues running fasted. I do Omad dinner. And can run anytime the next day. Morning. Midday. Even later afternoon. I’m in ketosis (>12 hours fasted) when I run. Running fed I feel like crap.

Best advice is try it. If you’re rebuilding mileage it should be fine to test the waters. I enjoy running fasted. Easy to just let go. Often get into something approaching runners high. Just look at the clouds and let my mind wander.

I once tried running approaching 48 hours fasted. It was a 5k corporate event. Figured it’d be fine. It was a little bit of a struggle. I did finish just couple minutes slower than normal, but can’t say I’d rush to do it again. But anything less than 20 hours I have no issues. Love it!

I’ve done several half marathons and always ran first thing in the morning in a fasted state. I was IF before I knew it was a thing bc I wouldn’t eat until about noon once I felt up to eating after a run. But I refueled adequately during the day to where I guess I used yesterdays fuel. I also used to CrossFit fasted and eat about the same schedule. Working out midday would be tough for me bc I’d be hungry by the time it’s time to workout. It might work for you once your body gets used to it. Good luck on the half!
