Is a 120h fast as a beginner achievable?

I'm currently attempting a 120 hours fast and I'm about 53 hours in right now. I haven't fasted before but I don't really eat much during the day anyway so I'm not feeling that hungry. I was wondering if this goal was realistic.

Answer

I started my 120 hour fast last week and broke it yesterday at 99. It was my first long fast. It’s possible for anyone to do it. I started to feel sick towards the end so I ended it. Keep going and listen to your body. My back was sore and my legs felt week but wanted end it was that I felt like throwing up. Not a bit nauseous but like I was going go full on be sick.

People say it gets easier the more you do it and I read a couple of articles that your body does adapt.

I’m going to be really mindful of packing my body full of nutrient dense foods and try again over Christmas. I’m vegan so these really aren’t big eating holidays like they are for most.

The fact that you’re 53 hours in on your first ever fast should tell you something. A lot of people don’t have the mental willpower right off the bat for that.

Physically, you will be fine. Keep in mind your body isn’t used to fasting though, especially that long, so keep up with your electrolytes and pay attention to how you feel and don’t make yourself continue if you start feeling bad. The vast majority of people can’t jump into an even 24-48hr right off the bat. The fact you are already halfway to your goal is incredible. Most people slowly ease their body and mental willpower into longer fasts.

Reminder that when you break your fast to take it slow with some broth, eggs, and other low-carb easy foods. Nothing to worry about after only 5 days, but your stomach might cramp up and shit itself for an hour if you go too quick or hard👌

How has the fast been so far? I’m interested to hear your experience with getting to 53hrs on your first fast.

Answer

I’m quite new to the practice, on my second fast now as it works out, and made it 3 1/2 days the first time. I didn’t dial in the electrolyte theme and didn’t feel well at all, really, calling it off when I noticed heart palpitations, or something like that. Hunger was an issue but not too bad.

If you feel fine why not keep going for five days, probably only related to addressing electrolyte intake, since there is no need to add extra risk to the process. But the one take-away from that first round was that it would’ve probably been easier to progressively ramp it up, to do a day, then two, then four, not only to cover related details but also to let my body adjust to the experience.
