Lemon in fasting window

Hi all! I am F35, 5’6” and 160 lbs. I have recently lost 30 lbs doing calorie counting and have hit a plateau. I’ve decided to start 16:8 IF (along with still tracking my calories) to see if it can break me out of this plateau. I like to start my morning with a couple glasses of hot water with lemon juice before I switch to black coffee. My current fasting window is from 7pm to 11am. I’ve seen plenty of things that say black coffee is fine, but I’m curious about the lemon juice. On the bottle it says 0 calories for a serving of 1tsp. I probably have 1-2tbsp per day. I know it’s not actually 0 calories, probably more like 4 or 5. I really like this routine but I don’t want to short change myself on the benefits of IF. For those who are more knowledgeable about this, will the lemon impact anything?

My Mom and I have done “clean fasting” for around a year now so we stick to only water and black coffee during the fasting window. She’s lost around 60 pounds and has met her goal and I’ve lost around 20 but I still want to lose another 20-40.

We try to avoid anything else with “taste” because we don’t want to spike our insulin during our fasting period. Only exception is toothpaste lol.

Realistically speaking though people still lose weight doing “dirty fasting” where they consume a small amount of calories during their fasting window (ex. coffee with a little creamer or some bone broth) as long as an overall calorie deficit is maintained.

Answer

Technically anything with calories breaks a fasting window, but most of the research I have read suggests that weight loss with fasting only comes from caloric restriction. In other words if you eat 1500 cal in one meal or 1500 cal in three meals the weight loss will be very similar. There are some other benefits to fasting like autophagy, but I’m not sure how much that would be affected by 5 calories.
