Lifting while fasted

I'm curious how any of you still do cardio or lift weights while fasted? I used to fully believe that you had to eat immediately after excercise or else your body would eat your muscles. Wish I would have known decades ago that this is not true. Im 44 hours into my second fast of 2023. Last night gymed and did some heavy squats and heavy power cleans. Felt amazing and still feel good today. I have a theory that when you add strenuous excercise to fasting you enhance your body's fat processors and make them more efficient. When we eat normally we have so many sugars and carbs we rarely tap into our fat reserves. So the fat processor barely gets any use. Pushing yourself to exercise while fasted is pretty hard at first just like fasting. But since I've been regularly doing this I feel fine. And ultimately not worried about muscle mass. Once I hit my target weight I'll strategically eat and train and hopefully gain lean mass while being max shredded. That's the idea....we'll see how reality turns out. Any of you guys still Gym while fasting?

Answer

I’m lifting and doing at least 10k a day. Started with a three day fast and now doing OMAD. My lifts suffered at the end of the 3 day. I was going to go longer but I wasn’t willing to lose much strength for the fast.

Number on the scale is still going down, but heavy lifting while hungry sucks. Tummy cramps, less endurance. What helps is knowing this is mostly temporary. Cutting 20lbs then back to improving my lifts.

I still take some supplements like vitamins and collagen and that’s it. Otherwise, I think gyming while fasting is determining what kinda of performance loss you’re willing to accommodate while meeting your fasting goals (I’m assuming weight loss).

im in my 4th day extended fasting, day 1 and 2 walked like 5km total, days 2 and 3 stationary bike 20-25 mins, day 3 lifted with no problem other than occasional dizziness, feeling very sore tho. today im going for a walk + bike + lifting again, exercising actually gives me some energy. only went heavy on squats and barbell rows, the rest about 50-60% 1rm

I tend to center my fasting around what days ill be lifting - then when lifting OMAD and work out right before the meal. Not sure if that’s scientifically what’s best but it feels best for me. Hope that helps!

I fast 90 to 98 hours each week and break the fast with a weight lifting session. I think it goes fine, maybe off by a few percent.

I don’t continue fasting after lifting though, as I use the weight lifting as the time to switch over to anabolic/mtor mode so take whey protein while lifting. Then have a lot of food for the remainder of the week and squeeze in another weight lifting session. I’m trying to preserve (and maybe gain) lean tissue while dumping fat. It’s gone well so far.
