My experience: IF as IBS treatment

I've been doing IF on and off now for a long time, but I think I just recently put the pieces together about how it impacts my gut issues. I have really bad IBS, which is triggered by such a wide array of things – sometimes kind of randomly – that trying to deal with it via food restrictions is untenable. (Or at least for someone like me, who loves food, it feels untenable) I recently had fallen off the wagon for about 6 months and I was eating lunch again and also snacking throughout the day. In addition to slowly gaining weight, I was just feeling like shit all of the time. I thought it might be lack of sleep, too much alcohol, stress, etc. But I started back up with IF – which for me basically means not eating anything until the end of the work day – and it's honestly like magic. In addition to dropping weight, my stomach issues immediately smoothed out. This also makes it easier for me to exercise during the day. (I run, and running during an IBS flare up is bad news) I've been to a bunch of doctors to seek treatment for my IBS symptoms and nobody has had an answer other than to stop eating pretty much everything I love to eat or to start taking SSRIs (which are supposed to help, for who knows what reason) IF is the only thing that seems to consistently improve my symptoms with minimal impact on my life. I'm not sure why, but I have a *much* easier time digesting pretty much everything when I eat late in the day on an empty stomach. Just thought I would share, in case anyone wants to try it for similar reasons!

I feel similar, I don’t eat any different, but after the first few days of adjustment (where I have an extra strong gastrocolic reflex) thing just seem to chill out more. Smaller meals too, which may help.

I have IBS as well and when I do IF it works really well. My worst period is in the morning after waking up , I need a couple of hours for my stomach and intestines to be ready for the day. If I do IF and I stop eating at around 6PM my mornings are so much easier! I only need about half an hour to get ready for the day then. Eating from 12:30 to 18:00 is really been life changing for me.
