new to fasting - should i "end" my fast - broth?

31 hours in - woke up after 4 hours of sleep, feeling a bit dizzy and acid-y. decided to take some HPS and Cream of Tartar (I dont have no-salt but hear CoT is great for potassium), and an electrolyte tablet (Roctane ultra endurance). one sip of the HPS and CoT and starting gagging. could. not. do. it. I've only been drinking water and black coffee. Decided, after some browsing, to do some broth - Did 1/2 tsp of Vegetable better than Bouillon (Vegetarian so bone broth is out of the question), this is 5 calories worth according to the label. I want to keep going, but I technically "consumed". should I *End* my fast (on the app)?

Answer

I think the general consensus is you can intake ~50 calories per day and still be in a fasted state. It’s up to you whether you consider that breaking your fast as some people do and some don’t. If you’re fasting for weight loss I wouldn’t consider 5 calories enough to say you broke your fast, I doubt that is even enough to stop autophagy. If you’re new to fasting I wouldn’t go longer than 48 hours before having your potassium situation figured out, you’ll start feeling fatigued with muscle soreness and in my case get very bad restless leg if your potassium levels are low.

People like to draw hard lines here. Let me give you my approach, which I generally get from Gary taubes and Jason Fung (fasting authors/researchers).

Perfect fasting has benefits. Fasting but having 5 calories has almost identical benefits. It is normal to feel slightly dizzy or slightly nauseous for short periods during extended fasting. However, people online won’t be able to know for sure how serious your symptoms are, so it’s up to you. Personally, I dealt with nausea and dizziness on day 1 and 2, but am at about the 60 hour mark and feeling good again.

If you are worried about your health, totally good to end your fast. But, if you are worried that your fast is “useless” or similar because you had a tiny amount of broth, don’t worry yourself. Some people find great success with broth daily during their version of a fast.

You will quickly renter keypads if this removes you from it somehow (I doubt it will). You will maintain the benefits of autophagy. You are still losing weight. Your blood sugar is still stable and lower than when you’re eating carbs all day.

Great job getting this far. If you want to continue, don’t worry about the things you e described here. If you feel bad and want to stop fasting, also don’t worry about that, chief. Good luck out there.

The name of the game is compliance. If in order to comply with your 48 hour fast you need to consume a few calories at some point, do it. Your fast would be better if you didn’t, but a few calories to continue is way better then actually ending your fast.

Do whatever you need to in order to comply with your fast. Don’t use it as an excuse, but if some broth will get you to continue then drink the broth.

Answer

31 hours and you should be able to eat almost anything. Refeeding problems happen when your dealing with 5-day+ fasts. This does not mean that your body/stomach may not have problems eating after a fast, but these problems are nothing like refeeding issues.

Answer

When ending a long fast like this, you must, must drink a bone broth, maybe veggie broth, but chicken or beef is fine, slowly introduce light foods into system after broth. Good luck. Your fast is ended just by consuming cream of tarter. If you can’t do bone broth, boil some vegetables, drink that veggie water, then consume vegetables. You need your protein though, be mindful. Good luck
