Not losing Weight While Fasting

Type 2 diabetic, with chronically high sugars, constantly in high 200s to low 300s fasting. 3 weeks ago I decided to get serious about IF so I started it with window of 18/6. Within 1 week my glucose went from 300 fasting to low 200s. Now being week # 3 I am in 120 fasting range. I'm happy my sugars have gone down but I'm still at 300 lbs, which was my starting weight 3 weeks ago. It makes no sense to me how I am eatting so little yet I'm not dropping weight. I literally cut out all junk food, all fast food, all of it. I am obviously not eating unhealthy, because if I was then my sugar wouldn't had dropped to where it is at now. Anyone else ever go through this? Does it take several weeks for weight to start coming off when you IF?

Answer

Well done for fasting for that long. At your weight, with your sugar levels, that must have been so hard to achieve. Congratulations on making the changes with your sugar level. That’s an excellent achievement.

As for weight, the next step will be to fast for a bit longer. It should be a bit easier now because you have been doing it for a while and your sugar levels are not as bad. Good luck on your journey.

I have been there my friend. I tried 18-6 for three years, lost some inches, but hardly any weight. I finally gave up on it and went full on Dr. Fung Diabetes Code- 36 hour fasts every third day. It is challenging but I do it. My sugars are in the 79-160 range. I have been doing it for 3 months now down 30lbs. I have no idea how long I will have to do it, and three times I had to quit early because I got symptoms of getting low. Fung says you MUST end, even if your sugars are good-SO I DID.

my cells were just crammed with excess sugar that needs to go. It can be done, I didn’t think I could do 36 over and over, so I tried so diligently with the 18-6. For me 18-6 was not enough but 36 is.

Read Delay Don’t Deny and Fast Feast Repeat.

I didn’t lose any the first month either (when looking at averages ), but since then I have been steadily dropping. Every time I freak out that I’m stalling I check averages and the rate is consistent when looking at my starting date and rate. Give it 9 more weeks and then compare. Also IF is doing great things for you. Maybe it is just starting by healing your out of whack glucose levels.

Answer

Also worth checking on what you do in your six hour window. Do you have two healthy meals for example, or do you graze pretty much the whole time?

If you are eating several times you are triggering your insulin constantly so that might not be helping.

If you aren’t already doing this, try breaking your fast with a high protein/low carb meal with plenty veg, then don’t break fast again (also don’t drink sugary stuff etc) until your evening meal. See if that helps.

Answer

18/6 isn’t a weight loss window. Youneed to drop to at least 20/4 or 19/5. Being a diabetic at 300lbs your body will take longer to shed weight. A snack and full meal in 4-5 hours will help you lose weight however work up to it slowly if you feel that’s too much too soon. You will eventually lose weight.

Answer

Give it more time - your body is working on getting rid of the excess glycogen being stored in your system. You might really need to shorten up that eating window some more and make sure you’re eating good, healthy meals that will sustain you for a longer fast. Put the scale away for another month or so before you get back on it. Good luck on your journey! You’ve got this!

Answer

  1. you didn’t put on all the weight in a week, so don’t expect it to suddenly start dropping off in a week, it takes time for things to start moving.

  2. you will only lose weight by being in a caloric deficit. Burn more calories than you consume.

Answer

I struggle with high triglycerides which is greatly improved when im fasting. I notice when I haven’t fasted in awhile I start to feel better quickly but don’t lose weight for probably a week. I think my body is burning off all the fats in my blood etc when this happens. You may have done the same with sugar. Keep at it

Answer

It’s actually the opposite tbh, fast at first ,then plateaus.just focus on the day to day. don’t eat what you know you can’t for your condition, but don’t starve yourself from what you like. You can have” unhealthy food” if you want , but in moderation.the key is to make this your new lifestyle, not a “diet” to see results. First two months I lost 40 lbs , 6 months later I’m at nearly 70 , even with a few slip ups. Take your time and it’ll workout eventually; otherwise you’ll just rebound.

Answer

So even if you’ve changed what you’re eating, with weight loss, how much you’re eating is still a factor! It’s great that you’re eating healthier and your body is obviously thanking you for it. But to actually drop pounds, you’d need to eat at a calorie deficit.

If you are doing so, you should be losing and I’d consult a medical professional over Reddit as to possible reasons that you’re not. Best of luck, and keep going with the healthy choices you’re making!

following, i have been doing somewhere between 22/2 & omad for an entire month & eating vegetarian low histamine low oxalate wicked low calorie & nothing but lots of water, plain matcha & some black coffee in fasting windows & i am consistently still hovering between 177-180. for frame of reference, less than a year ago i was 120, i got terribly sick from hidden toxic mold in my apartment during cvid stay at home orders & it threw my whole EVERYTHING out of whack & i rapidly packed on a ton of weight without even eating any more food than normal, nothing makes any sense. i don’t understand. also, for further reference if it matters at all, prior to this mold illness, i fluctuated between 110-120 & was active, ate healthy (vegan/vegetarian/pescatarian) for my whole life. gained about 20lbs years ago after a really bad car accident, but lost it again & got back down to 110.

Answer

The Obesity Code book is helpful for understanding the different fasts you can do. I can maintain on 18/6 but I don’t lose weight in that window of time. 20/4 is where I see the weight loss. Also since you are diabetic you can ask your doctor for a semaglutide shot. Adding peptides will help lower blood sugars and stimulate insulin production targeting areas of the brain that regulate appetite so you won’t feel hungry all the time

Answer

Unless you are fairly physically active every day and/or have normal or higher than normal metabolism, then 18:6 is not enough to bring you in to ketosi or in anyway gain any meaningful benefit from IF. My suggestion to you is to go for at least 22:2 or simply OMAD.
