Commercial cereals are just loaded with unnecessary things, specially sugars. If you want a healthy option, go with oats. Add fruit and nuts if you want. That’s it. Efficient, cheaper and better option than processed marketing.
I just looked up LIFE cinnamon cereal and the sugar is at 8 grams which would cut your sugar in half. This is for less than a cup though, I’m not sure if your listing was for a full cup.
Also less sodium and more protein.
Interesting side note…I was eating All Bran cereal for the fiber. It is fairly low cal but it actually has 12 grams of added sugar. It tastes like cardboard so I don’t understand how! Just shows it is important to read the label.
If you like the flavor, you can at least make oatmeal that tastes very similar in your own kitchen:
oats
water or milk
brown sugar
cinnamon
tiny bit of butter
tiny pinch salt
Control what’s going into your food to understand what you are eating. It’s the processed nature of those foods that is apparently really unhealthy for us.
It’s highly processed and has lot of sugar.I believe there is much worst on the market, but this it’s still very unhealthy. It contains processed oils, highly processed sugars and bad sugars, unnatural added vitamins and minerals .
I can’t even imagine the processes that those cereals went through xD .It’s a sugar bomb that tries to fix all his nutritional flaws by adding artificial vitamins. But vitamins aren’t very useful in this way.
It’s one of the many lab products, you can eat it sometimes, but isn’t healthy to eat too much of it.Maybe 2 to 3 times X week maximum too keep your body clean and healthy.
I won’t repeat everything that’s already said about added sugar and processed food so here is a quick to make and cheap alternative:
Cinnamon crunchy cereal
500g rolled oats (whole grain if available)
2 Tbsp. oil
4 Tbsp. honey
Cinnamon to taste
Melt the oil and honey together in a large pot or frying pan, stir in the oats, add cinnamon as much as you like. Stir stir stir to roast and caramelize it, move it around a lot so it doesn’t burn! When it has turned a nice golden color, take it from the stove and pour into a large bowl to cool (you shouldn’t keep it in the hot pan for this, because it will keep roasting)
Once cooled, put in a container of your choice (I use a big mason jar like they sell at Ikea etc)
It’s SO delicious and sweet and nice, yet really filling and all natural ingredients that are really healthy
I’m less interested in the nutrition breakdown than in the ingredients. The stuff that’s sold over here does have whole wheat as the first ingredient, with sugar as a second ingredient. This makes it a way better choice than other breakfast cereals. However, oats still beat it hands down.
So I agree: it’s the sugar.
You could do instant oats and add your own sultanas (or other dried or fresh fruit) and nuts or seeds - for a healthier, tasty and easy to make alternative. And yes, add cinnamon if that’s to your taste.
If you enjoy it, eat it. You don’t have to have it every day. Make sure to have it with something protein heavy like scrambled eggs or sprinkle it on Greek yogurt so you can stay satisfied until a morning snack.
As other people have said that studies show eating foods high in added sugars = risk for health problems.Just want to tack on the “why”.Naturally occurring sugars, in fruits for example, are paired with fiber and vitamins, which helps slow consumption and contribute to satiety.Over consuming foods with a lot of added sugars are leads to high calorie consumption, but lack the other nutrients and fiber, leading to overeating, GI issues, etc which is associated with poor health outcomes. Some Cinnamon Toast Crunch every once in a while is totally fine! It’s not “bad for you”. Eating too many apples would be “bad” too. But that doesn’t make them a bad food.
I think looking at the ingredients would be better than just looking at the nutrition facts. It’s sugary and processed, does nothing for you. I wouldn’t eat it for breakfast, maybe a desert actually cause it wouldn’t do anything for me.
The challenge with Cinnamon Toast Crunch is that the majority of its energy comes from monosaccharides, which is simple sugars.. it doesn’t take your body much energy to metabolize it, and won’t leave you feeling very satiated afterwards which will lead you to want more food.
Is it bad for you? That’s a crappy way to look at food… I would say, There are food choices that provide a more balanced macronutrient profile, leaving you feel fuller longer, for as many calories…
I don’t know where you live, but the company Love Grown makes delicious cereals that are on the healthier spectrum with ingredients and they have a cinnamon flavor. They look like Cheerios and are called “Power O’s”. Ingredients in cinnamon are: Bean blend (navy beans, lentils, garbanzo beans), brown rice flour, cane sugar, cinnamon, salt, high oleic sunflower oil, sunflower lecithin, vitamin E (to maintainfreshness). If you’re in the US, places like Sprouts and Whole Foods carry it.
I like their chocolate comet crispies, personally 😁
Cereal is calorie dense. A lot of people consume several servings in one sitting and thus consume a lot of calories from cereal. Mind your portion sizes. Use a food scale preferably. That is literally it. I repeat: that is literally it.
It’s got virtually no fiber and is extremely high in sugar and refined carbs, it will provide you with no satiety has little nutritional value and will digest extremely quickly so it’s a pretty terrible breakfast choice. Instead opt for steel cut oats or avocado/egg on wholegrain toast which will be higher in fibre and provide some nutritional value
So it’s good that it has no saturated fat, but ultimately, it comes down to human behavior. If the food is calorie dense, and you use a big cereal bowl, you may consume much more than the suggested serving size. It is this overconsumption of calories that causes harm.
Lots of good comments about all the added sugar. The other thing is that the carbohydrates in it are refined, which means they are broken down into very tiny particles. In all likelihood when you eat it, your glucose would spike very high. That is what causes the negative health outcome.
Similarly, even though oat milk has just oats and water plus various gums, it’s very bad for you because the oat particles are ground so finely that it causes glucose to spike very high.
And even though instant oats are good for you, regular oats are better because the pieces are bigger and your body digest them much more slowly.
With all that sugar, it’s more of a dessert than a breakfast. If it were natural sugars, that’s not a huge problem, but it’s basically all added sugar. It’s especially not good to spike your blood sugar early in the morning.
Try to keep your carbohydrate intact to less than 15 g per serving. I’m not sure what the cereal grain is based on but wheat can spike your blood sugar faster than granulated sugar. I’m not sure about processed rice and corn. Too the added sugars are screwing your metabolism never mind feeding cancers. Not good. And i ate a bunch of this stuff over the years and i wondered why i was in the shape i was. Now I try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and some seeds and nuts. A good plant based of protein is absolutely a must today for each meal not just for me but you as well. Animal proteins like beef cause some molecular changes in your gut that are decidedly unhealthy.
highly processed, lots of acrylamide (from dry heating carbs until browning), canola and other seed oils superprocessed with terrible omega ratios and horrid chemicals, dead (overprocessed, no living enzymes), fake food (fine-tuned in a factory instead of evolving alongside us, lots of weird additives, flavours that skew your cravings) with lots of sugar/simple carbs and sugar analogues that mess with insulin resistance, cortisol production, lower immune function, more influence on cravings and a host of other things including spiking blood sugar…not a good choice
