Results from my 5 day fast

SW 204 / CW 194 / GW 150 Got a shock a week ago at the doctor's office when I weighed in at 215 on their scale. When I got home I weighed myself on our bathroom scale and, without the bulky boots and jackets, weighed in at 204. Decided to fast for a week to get this under control. I have a history of practicing OMAD for years, and mostly kept around 170 with a very active job. Once the pandemic started and I was laid off, I did all manner of dumb things like decide to perfect various baking projects while leading an entirely sedentary lifestyle. After nearly two years of this laziness I'm having to deal with the consequences. Fortunately I'm familiar enough with fasting to tackle the problem with a vengeance. Every day of my fast I kept on top of electrolytes and took a multivitamin. I also did some low-volume, heavy weightlifting each day. I stopped the fast after 5 days rather than 7 with the idea that I'd extend the refeeding period. I broke the fast over the course of several hours with a coconut milk, sardine, and arugula stew. Chewed the absolute hell out of every bite. An hour after finishing I did some more weightlifting. Definitely had the worst night of sleep after the refeed, whereas the nights during the fast were surprisingly comfy. I'm currently on the second day of refeeding, having a similar meal that's basically all fat and protein. My energy levels feel great but I'm going to take the day off from lifting to give my ligaments a chance to mend. I'm a bit surprised at the 10 lb difference as of today but I suppose that, were I to eat some carbs, my weight might creep up a couple of pounds. Nevertheless, I'm pleased with the results. Psychologically, I feel like the fast broke some poor eating habits that I had. My skin has cleared up some, and cravings for garbage food are practically non-existent. I went grocery shopping today and picked up some nice pickles, kimchi, and olives. I think I'll continue a more-or-less keto diet for the foreseeable future. It's a bit of a challenge since I don't eat meat aside from tiny fishes like sardines, but far from impossible. Best of luck to anyone else considering fasting for a similar duration. It's entirely possible to accomplish, and I feel like 5 days was an ideal stretch to manage without having to worry overmuch about refeeding afterwards.

Answer

I have done extended fasts before and it is suprising how much the feeling of hunger goes away after a day.

I did not weigh myself during these because when I did them my goal was not weight loss, but I am wondering how much of it was water weight lost, possible due to no sodium in the diet? With a fast you will also lose fat and muscle, there are scales that estimate body fat but I have yet to find one that also does muscle which would be the ideal one you want to track your body after a fast.

Hope you have a smooth journey to your goal weight!
