Starting a 3 Day Water Fast tonight

I've been eating Zero Carb / Carnivore since Saturday morning, two meals a day, in an 8 hour feeding window, and now that I've completed 3 days in a row of 1600 calories each, I'm willing to experiment with a 3 day fast. It's amazing how satisfying 2 no carb meals a day can be. I've been planning to do a 3 Day Fast for some time, and I think cutting back on carbs helped smooth things out for me. I am using an electrolyte pill and extra potassium pill that I'll take during this fast, and I'm otherwise not taking anything else during the fasting window. I'm not in ketosis, but I believe I've started to deplete my glycogen stores already. I'll update this thread once daily until I start eating again, and I'll pass along my experience. I ate dinner at 6:00 PM so my goal is to go 72 hours.

I’m 5’9” 165 lbs for 3 weeks in a row.

08/05/2018 (Sun) - 165.8 lbs

08/12/2018 (Sun) - 165.6 lbs

08/19/2018 (Sun) - 165.6 lbs

I am aiming for 155 eventually, as I try to lean out some. I’m not aiming for below a 22 BMI, and while I’m happy with my current bodyweight, I want to try this experience now that I know I need electrolytes. I’ve successfully done two 3 Day Fasts, and the third one I tried I halted at the end of the second day because I got dizzy opening the door to my house after a long day of work. So now that I know I need to prep a little in advance, and keep magnesium, potassium, and sodium levels up, I think I can do this. I’ll post my weight just before I eat my first meal, coming out of the fasting window.

I’m almost 20 hours in. Starting to feel hungry, as I’m next to a break room where food is heated up throughout the late morning and early afternoon. Otherwise I am not uncomfortable. I took the 2 pills this morning (electrolyte and additional potassium supplement) and one just now. So far so good!

I’m 30 hours in and my hunger pains have been gone for a few hours. I got so used to eating in the noon to 8 PM feeding window that I get hungry naturally in that time frame. What helped was watching some YouTube videos on fasting, keto, and carnivore dieting, while avoiding any videos on food itself. Im going to bed now and will report back tomorrow.

Answer

Well, last night was special. At about the 30 hour mark, before I went to bed, I suddenly was no longer tired, and could not sleep for much of the night. To some extent, that’s a good thing, because I had 2 “charlie horses” start up over night, but because I was awake, I was able to stretch my legs out before they could take hold. That said, I got very sporadic sleep, basically a small selection of naps, and I’m up for a long day.

I will try to stick with this fast through tomorrow night at 6:00 PM, but I hope I can get some sleep tonight, and not have any more leg issues. I’ve been taking 2 electrolyte pills, 3x daily, and that didn’t stave off this problem. It’s funny, I can feel a sort of pulsing going on with my hamstrings and calves, right now, so I guess that’s glycogen being drained or something. I’m staying hydrated, as well. Over a gallon of water a day.

The good news is that I’m down to 164.0 lbs, so I lost 1.6 lbs since I started, and I have _literally_ not seen that number in decades. Lowest I ever got was 164.5 on 12/18/2011 (yes I keep track of my weight every Sunday since Oct 2010), and I’ve been as heavy as 190.4lbs on 04/23/2016, so I’m not complaining.

Answer

I just ate some riblets and called it at 48 hours instead of 72 so I could sleep tonight. I’ll have to settle for Alternate Day Fasting or even OMAD. I’ve learned from this experience and I think I could do something like eat at noon one day, skip dinner, and the next day make it to 8 PM, to see how a 36 hour fast might work for me, and go from there.

I think the two reasons I didn’t as good as previous 3 day fast attempts is because I’m a) 4 years older, and b) 15 lbs lighter. Normally I start at 180, this time I did at 165. Trying to go to sleep without food for 30 hours was too sharp a curve. I wasn’t hungry today so I’d have to time my last meal better. Stuff to think about for the next one. :)

Answer

I slept really good last night, and this morning I weighed in at 161.8 lbs. I know that’s temporary, now that I’m back to eating twice daily, but it’ll be zero carb, so I am sure can stay under 165 for the time being. Fasting works!
