I’m a 24y afab nonbinary (transmasculine), and want to finally lose a significant amount of weight so I can start working towards top surgery (it’s advisable to be in your healthy range pre surgery as there are less risks then). I’m 5’5”, my sw is 233lbs, gw is 130-150. I’m pretty good at doing 18:6 on days I work (6am-2pm) but have trouble on days off cause I have access to food and often eat because I’m bored. My biggest problem is alcohol cause I’ve been drinking too much cause I have been very depressed, and when I drink I tend to overeat, and then get depressed cause I drank and overate, and the cycle continues. I want to work up to 20:4 or at least stay in a calorie deficit on 18:6, but also have trouble exercising when I’m fasting.
Do people usually count calories while doing IF? Calorie counting is exhausting to me, and especially difficult when I’m not preparing my own food.
I’m pretty desperate to lose weight though because my body image is at one of its worst points in my life, and even though I’m really trying not to tie my self worth to my body size, it’s hard when so many industries completely write you off if you’re overweight, let alone obese.
Is it unrealistic to try to lose 100lbs via IF in a year and should I include a more calculated calorie deficit?
Thanks for any and all support!
Answer
I like the phrase “one thing at a time.” Sounds like alcohol and depression are stressors in your life. I’d start working on those first. I had to get my depression and anxiety under control before i could focus on anything else. You can ease into IF (with or without calorie counting) when you are ready. Ive lost 40 lbs. in 6 months. But I could have not done this without managing my mental health first.

I don’t think it is unrealistic, just very difficult because it is such a huge lifestyle change. I think there are previous posts here, progress pics, where people have lost that much in a year.
You can do it!! I agree that quitting drinking helps, after I quit drinking 10lbs immediately melted off with no change to my diet at all
