supplements/medicines while fasting

For some health issues I take supplements and medicines on a daily basis: \- Medicines: Pentox (Pentoxifyline), Cialis (Tadalafil) \- Supplements: Vit E, Vit C, Vit D3+K2, CoQ10, PQQ, NAC, ALA, Magnesium, Omega 3, Quercetin, Tumeric My doubts: \- Does any of these medicines/supplements break a fast if I take them on empty stomach? \- Many of these are liposoluble supplements, so best way would be taking with fat. However that would break the fast. How do you supplement while fasting?

Answer

I am 100% sure you will have serious nausea if you take those supplements on an empty stomach. So only take them after a meal. There is a reason why most supplement manufacturers state ‘that tablets should be taken after a meal.

I came to r/fasting today with a similar question.

I often take ketone supplements (BHB), Maca root, psyllium, and HCL+pepsin for reflux. Wondering what to cut out.

“Breaking your fast” is really not strictly defined. For me, my major goal is to stay in ketosis with significant rapid weight loss. I could do this with OMAD but I want/need to do something more extreme right now. I’m still drinking coffee w/nutpods, tea if I want it, La Croix if I want it, and I will put my electrolytes in a cup or two of broth because I’d prefer to avoid snake juice. I’m also having a few bites of homemade sauerkraut daily. This is relatively extreme by my standards; usually when I fast I do OMAD with like a \~600 calorie salad with a fatty dressing for dinner.

For the liposoluble stuff, taking with a table spoon of peanut butter, nut butter, or yogurt is a reasonable solution imo.

I wonder if fasting/ketosis will resolve underlying health/hormonal issues for you and remove the need for Cialis?

Answer

Not sure if taking them breaks your fast but I take all of my supplements and a few prescriptions every day on ADF even on fasting days and have not had a problem. Though obviously that is super subjective person to person. With regard to breaking fasts, I do avoid things like fish oil on fasting days since that is closer to an actual food supplement.
