Sushi or Ramen?

On day 3 of my first 72h fast. Feeling great. I think the hardest part was the caffeine withdrawal! I timed this fast to end on a work dinner I have to attend tonight. The restaurant is known for ramen but also has a full sushi menu. Which should I choose to break my fast and why? They are obviously very different in terms of macros. My wife and I disagree over which would be better or worse on my stomach. One last note: since I am assuming I am currently in ketosis, contemplating going full keto for a while to see how it feels.

Answer

On a 72 hour fast I wouldn’t even worry about it. You should be fine breaking with pretty much anything you want. It isn’t until I go over 10 days or so that I’d even worry about slowly easing back into eating again.

Answer

Depends on what will be in the ramen but … Personally, I wouldn’t do ramen because the carbs (which heavily drag me down even off of a fast) but the nutritional variety could be a nice kickstart. Depending on your body and what ramen type you’re getting, some of the elements could be harder on your stomach to digest. The broth, however, would be really easy to digest and a great thing to use to wake your digestive system back up (if you could restrain yourself from eating anything other than the broth for a nice chunk of time)

Sushi, though, is typically very easy to digest if you make sure you chew properly. Since they also come in smaller servings it would be easier to eat one, wait a bit, then continue on as long as you kept feeling ok. Also, depending on what kind of sushi platter, you could still get some meaningful nutritional variety. It would also lend well to my low carb/keto style of eating

This is the discussion that would happen in my head. I personally would choose sushi but every body is different. I hope this helps you decide what’s best for you

I’ve fasted a lot in the past and after a long hiatus recently returned to rolling fasts. I forgot how dramatic the intro of food can be, and my first 72 reminded me… hopefully we’re wrong, but I’ll add to those warning you to be sure you have easy access to the restroom just in case.

OK seems like I am getting a lot of warnings about GI issues (to put it politely) when refeeding. This is a work dinner so I can’t do take out. What if I refed first at home 2 hours before the dinner? This would reduce it to a 70h not a 72h but would rather avoid soiling myself in public in front of my colleagues (lol) than get all the way to 72h. If I can eat anything at home, what should it be to avoid issues in a few hours? I was thinking a green smoothie or some avocado?

Answer

No carbs after a 72 hour fast for sure. Why do you want to invite inflammation? Also, GI issues with carbs not good in a public setting. Tuna tatakki and miso soup would be my order. Give keto a try for a few days (if not longer!) And see how you feel. Carbs hold on to water weight. The weight you gain on refeeding will be far less if you avoid carbs. Also, no alcohol.

Answer

At 72 hours, it doesn’t really matter. You can break your fast pretty much however you like.

But if you want to more easily move into a keto diet after your fast, then you can ask for the ramen noodles on the side and just give them to someone else. Miso, sashimi, edamame… you’ll surely find some good options. Several modern sushi places today even have a few rice-free sushi rolls that use cucumber instead. That said, you’ll need more fats than those options to stay or get back into ketois.
