Temporary Time Off from Fasting

I got sick and have not been fasting for the past 6 days of which I was sick. Unfortunately, I was not only sick with a cold, but also had my cycle for that same week! So, I decided to not fast and just feed my body when I was hungry and I wanted to share what that looked like, but also have a discussion with others who had to take a break from fasting and see what changes they saw in their bodies. I am going to lay out the timeline from start to finish of my weight, but keep in mind, my goal was never to limit calories, or even to limit weight gain. So, this is just routine for me to do weigh-ins in the morning: 11/15/22 - Before I felt sick 174.4 11/16- Officially sick; start of cycle 176.6 11/17- 174.4lbs 11/18- 175.2lbs 11/19- 177.0lbs 11/20- 178.4lbs 11/21- 179.6lbs 11/22- End of cycle; mostly not sick 181.6lbs Typically for me, when I am on my cycle, I usually gain 3-4lbs and once the cycle is over, I will lose that weight. As you can see here, I have steadily gained weight. My average caloric intake without any fasting of any kind (keto for ref) was 1800-1900 calories with very little physical activity. What I found interesting was that I was constantly trying to snack. I started eating roughly three times per day with a snack. Then, it went down to roughly two meals with snacking. I also realized, that after around three days in, I had regular bowel movement that seemed to come shortly after a meal. This is new, as I have never been a regular person in that sense. Also, I felt squishier, I didn't change much in inches, but I felt a bit bloated or full all the time. One benefit of eating and not fasting, is I feel I have better control of my energy. I don't feel lulls in energy and don't have to constantly worry about electrolytes. Also, I got to experience being able to drink my coffee, diet coke and whatever zero calorie drink whenever I wanted. Especially if you are a clean faster, you often have to limit it to your eating window and since my window is so short, I rarely get a chance to enjoy all my drinks. I am feeling much better and have decided to start doing 23:1's for two days, and then attempting to go back to my regular schedule of 47:1 71:1 47:1 in a week. This is an interesting experience, as I have often wondered if I would be able to maintain my weight once, I hit my goal. I think there are special challenges there and I am not sure if I know the answer to that, but it seems that I need to be mindful of how many calories I am eating. For others who have had to take a break from fasting, what were some of the changes you've noticed? What if any changes did you make to help yourself along the way during your break?

I stopped fasting for about 2 months or so because of job stress. I was literally incapable. I changed jobs. Now I’m back at it. I stopped strength training during that time as well.

I did notice I splurged a little at the beginning then gradually came back down to my normal eating routine. I was in the process of finally taking care of myself so I let it go. Let’s say I enjoyed life a bit.

I’ve had some hormonal issues with BC over the last couple months as well which contributed to my water weight gain. I was up to 210 almost 2 weeks ago, 206 on Friday then yesterday down to 201. I have gained up to 10lbs of water weight during cycles and with hormonal stress. My measurements are still the same. All the new clothes I bought still fit really well. The only thing is that damn water. I feel like a camel sometimes.

Overall I needed the fasting break. Breaks are great. Not only am I better off my larger lifts went up tremendously. With my squat I was barely pushing 100lbs in august. I started again 2 weeks ago and easily doing 160 now with my 1RM at 170.

I think we learn a bit about intuitive eating. I don’t count calories. I would say I’ve only gained a couple lbs of real body fat and the rest of it water. I’ve essentially maintained all year.

That being said, I joined the pre-thanksgiving fast this week. 48 hrs later and feeling fantastic, aside from the not sleeping great but that’s normal for me.

Can you tell me more about your regular fasting schedule? How do you feel on it? What sort of meal do you break your fast with? I’m assuming it’s 47 hours of fasting then eat for one hour? I’ve been trying to find something that will fit my schedule and these may be it
