Weight Cycling

I've been lurking on this sub for a short time while slowly losing weight through dieting and exercising. Seeing the amazing results you guys have posted has enticed me to consider fasting, and I've been doing some research on how to do so safely. My only concern is weight cycling. If I ever stop fasting, will all that weight pile back on? I read that when the body goes into starvation mode, it will work extra hard to hold on to fat once you eat something. Does anybody have any insight on this topic?

Answer

I’ve found that after fasting I physically can’t eat as much as I used to! I also think it’s a good idea to incorporate 1 or 2 longer fasts each week just to keep your mojo if you feel like you’re slipping!

Answer

That depends. Are you going to resume eating the same amount in the same way as you did before? If the answer is yes, yes your weight will come back and quickly.

If you ate around a maintenance level of calories, no you won’t put it all back on. You will put on some though.

Basically the question is, what’s your plan after fasting and why did you fast? If you are fasting to lose weight, why do you have so much weight to lose?

Answer

Your body won’t go into “starvation mode” unless you are actually starving. Like days without food. You may overeat after fasts, which will result in your body storing that as fat. It is a good idea to have a planned breakfast meal so you don’t eat everything in the house. At the end of the day it is calories in calories out and what works for you.

Answer

its untrue that you will go into survival mode. you will not hold onto fat. the body is not fragile like that. that is misinformation. just continue counting calories as you fast, as it is no different other than it produces a larger deficit (depends on how much you eat in the hours before/after the fast). skipping an entire day of eating is a 100% calorie deficit, for example.

most people are just bad at calorie counting (just a statement, no ill will) so they cant see how much calories play a role here. but more than that, people just want a hands free way to lose fat, which is what fasting does, and end up believing all the smoke about survival mode that people like eric berg and jason fung push, and and that somehow fasting is special enough to violate the laws of thermodynamics. that was me at one point and i wasted so much time believing them. please dont be afraid, you will not shut down. however, your daily energy expenditure could go down during the fast itself.

i have calorie counted for 2 years and fasted for 8 years of a wide spectrum of lengths. there are no differences except size of deficit.
