What are the benefits of IF to you?

Here's how it works for me: 1. I ate a lot of calories at night, watching TV and stuff. Not because I was hungry - but just, IDK, out of habit, or boredom, or because it's what you do when you watch a movie. Ending my eating window at 8 cuts out almost all of may danger hours. Because I don't generally snack during the day, it just automatically cuts out of bunch of unnecessary junk calories. 2. As someone with T2, I'm not going to pretend to know why - but it sensitizes my cells to insulin. My fasting BG levels are normal. But even more telling is my post-prandial numbers are also now normal. I don't spike like I used to at all (they rise like someone would with a normal healthy metabolism). This (in combination with intense vigorous exercise) is like, the secret sauce that makes management of blood glucose easy. 3. Tying into 2 above - having this latitude gives me a greater diversity of meals. I love to cook. Eating a wide diversity of foods is a great joy in my life. Being able to eat the foods I want and not worry about the impacts to my health is priceless. It's almost like I can have my cake and eat it too (so to speak). I've tried the keto / low carb route. It works (not knocking it for people who enjoy Keto - I get it, there are lots of benefits to it, I just couldn't personally sustain it). And I was absolutely miserable on it. IF gives me the same benefits without the misery. 4. It's taught me a LOT about hunger. Hunger is real, but it's only a feeling. It comes in waves. There are all kinds of ways to distract yourself when it gets bad. But it doesn't actually harm you. You're not going to die because your feeding window is still 6 hours away and you want to gnaw your arm off. Once I got over that, it became so much easier to just. . .extend the fasts when I wanted to. 16 hours become 18 hours becomes OMAD, or 36 hour fasts. ..all of it quite tolerable now. Yes, of course I still get hungry. But just having the experience that comes with fasting makes it easy to deal with. Usually a cup of tea or coffee or a brisk walk can take care of any pangs. 5. The corollary with hunger is - I feel so much better otherwise. More energy, less lethargy. More alertness, less brain fog. 6. It's so simple. It really requires no decision other than what time you want to start and stop the fast. 7. It's so flexible. Need to break a fast for social reasons or whatever? Do it. Move the window the next day. It's really nbd. 8. It takes an entire meal or two out of the day to shop, prepare, cook, and clean up for off the table. That's nice time back! 9. It's the most sustainable way to lose weight I've ever tried. 10. No products to buy, no special foods to add (keeping in mind that many people also structure the feeding window to combine with other dietary restrictions or requirements they might have). 11. Weight loss can be frustrating with a lot of ups and downs and sometimes long plateaus. If I ever hit a plateau with IF it's so simple to adjust - just shrink the window a couple of hours. If that doesn't work, shrink it again - it will! 12. Maintenance is even easier than weight loss phase. So many diets fail because you come off them and then slowly get back into regular habits. IF can be life-long. Once you hit the goals, just go back to a less restrictive window but still maintain daily fasts and I don't get in trouble with the snacking (which is my real Achilles heel). I generally don't over indulge in a structured meal - the problem is and always has been the snacking. IF just cuts all the danger hours out - which means maintenance isn't a problem as long as I keep it going.

Thank you for fraying your great list! I enjoy that Im not constantly thinking about my next meal snack when I’m using IF. Before I was always thinking about what I got to eat next. I planned out my dinners while I ate breakfast. I feel differently now. I enjoy my meals much more, and I my cravings are nearly gone. I don’t feel like I’m chasing a high anymore.

You did a really good job of explaining your process. Congrats on getting your eating under control in a way you can live with. That’s the point isn’t it.Most of us have successfully lost weight but far fewer have been able to keep it off. That is my goal this time. Thasnk-you for spelling it out so well.
