What are your thoughts on coffee during a fast?

I do 18:6, usually 6pm-12pm each day. But I always have coffee in the am. I use stevia as a sweetener and a low calorie creamer (nut pods) that I measure out to keep the calorie content low. I read that less than 50 calories will not ‘break’ the fast, but I’m curious about others experiences.

Answer

Clean fasting makes everything so much easier and better (in my opinion!) I don’t consider having sweetener of any kind, let alone creamer, to be fasting… Everyone does things differently, though. Maybe try it and if you’re not seeing success, then make changes. But I’ve heard dirty fasts make the actual fasts a lot harder.

Answer

To each their own. Everyone fasts for different reasons. When I fast it’s zero calories with no wiggle room. I also really love red wine so drinking coffee black is kinda my preference. I know people post about a splash of milk and some people put in however much they want. If you’re fasting because an eating window cuts your calories to a healthy range then use stevia and creamer. If you’re fasting for other fasting reasons then you may cut out the stevia and creamer.

I wrote this next part not because I want everyone to stop drinking coffee. Everyone should do what they want in their lives.

I’ve stopped drinking coffee altogether. I was a massive coffee addict before. I would drink two French presses filled with black coffee before I had lunch. Sometimes more coffee after lunch. But I got worried about bad breath, disturbing my gut microbiota with so much black coffee on an empty stomach and stained teeth.

I felt so so so exhausted for about three months, but I pushed through. I really wanted to kick this habit that had me tied down. (I would happily go to bed before, only because I knew I was getting coffee afterwards. That’s how addicted I was).

Realising that coffee doesn’t give you energy, but just blocks the receptors in your brain registering how absolutely tired you actually are, also helped. I think this part is also why it took so long for me to feel good again after quitting. I needed a long time to reset my brain to normal.

It’s been almost a year now and I don’t even miss the act of drinking coffee anymore. I hardly think about it. The only time I miss it is when I walk passed a place that has really good coffee. But I feel so good from not drinking coffee, I don’t want to get into that trap ever again. I wake up with energy. I don’t need a bucket of coffee to get me going. I don’t have headaches on days when I accidentally drink less caffeine. Sure I get tired at the end of the day, but that’s normal. We can’t keep on going like we are made of battery packs. Humans need rest, you need to feel when you need rest. My sleep is great (but that was never really an issue for me anyway).

You don’t need to quit coffee, because some crazy lady on the internet told you to do it. Just know that if you want to, it’s possible, totally possible and maybe now is the time to do it.

This the 50th post this week about “I add x or x to my coffee I’m still good right?.

Try buying good coffee beans before you start adding junk to it.

Buy good beans, grind at home, make in a French press.

Alternatively, make cold brew.

If you’re buying Folgers and making it in a mr.coffee then yeah your coffee is NOT going to taste good.

Answer

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a big deal to have a coffee every morning. But as people pointed out, it might considered as breaking the fast. I drink black coffee through the day (not like 15 shots, but just sip on 1 or maybe 2 Americanos). It has no sugar, creamer/milk.

I would recommend trying to have pure black coffee, as it seems like you really need it in the mornings sometimes. I know I get a headache if I don’t have coffee right in the morning as I wake up.

Coffee also kills my appetite so I don’t feel hungry while fasting :)

Answer

I hear it depends on your reason for fasting. The app Zero has a good video on it. Basically, it says if you are fasting for weight loss or metabolic benefits, it’s ok (I think they said w/ a small amount of cream). If you are fasting for other reasons, stick to water only. That app is pretty great fwiw.

Answer

I think you should drink a small black coffee while fasting (if you generally don’t drink too much caffeine) and then have another small latte in your eating window.

Also try to cold brew or buy better tasting coffee that makes it wayyyy easier to drink it black. I pretty much only like cold brew black coffee. Otherwise I drink mine with cream and sugar.

Yeah not adding cream and sugar was hard for me too. But just try to make it work, honestly even coffee is probably not the best for a fast. Plus think of not adding that as bonus food calories too!

Answer

I’ll eat pickles and/or a zero calorie soda when I’m fasting sometimes and I find that it makes fasting more enjoyable and sustainable for me. Well under 50 calories and I get the satisfaction of something sweet and/or crunchy.

Answer

I have 100 calories of iced coffee in the morning (coffee, 1 tsp sugar, some creamer) and am doing 16:8; it’s making absolutely no difference. I don’t consider it breaking my fast and don’t care what anyone says.

Answer

i have never liked coffee with milk , so its always been black no sugar for me.
and when push comes to shove you are breaking a fast if you add anything else to a black coffee. but lets be honest even if you had 2 table spoons of milk it’s going to have such a miniscule effect its pointless worrying about it.
