What do you eat when you AREN'T fasting?

I'm new to fasting and I'm wondering what happens in the time outside of fasting. Do you follow a specific diet? Eat all kinds of foods? Three times a day? With colleagues/classmates? How often do you eat out? I guess what I'm curious about is the different ways to fit fasting into one's life. Just as an example, now that I know a bit about the effects of sugar on insulin spikes, I feel cautious about eating simple carbs/sugar. However not eating any pastry or such forever when there are many I would like to try seems a bit... Like I would be missing out. Any input appreciated :)

I do OMAD every day. I eat anything and everything I want when it’s time for dinner. I normally cook healthier things but I’ll allow myself the occasional fast food trip to BK or Taco Bell along with sit-downs for steaks, Italian, Mexican, and classic diners.

Really wish there was better Indian food in my area…

My diet when I’m not fasting has changed, but not drastically. I eat a lot of cleaner foods, I love veggies personally, eat a lot of “meat, veggie side, small carb” dishes. Lots of soups, lots of oven bakes (like kielbasa, and veggies over rice). The main thing I’ll say is I don’t completely avoid carbs, but I try to make the ones I do eat all whole grain. Brown rice, quinoa, whole barley, making my own bread and pasta with whole wheat flour (easier than you think!), etc.

That’s not to say that I avoid sugar or processed carbs completely! I just try to minimize those things to an occasional treat, and not a cornerstone of my diet like they used to be. I’m a firm believer that we need occasional indulging to make it all worth it in the long run, nobody wants to completely abandon sweets and carbs forever, or they’re more likely to give up in my opinion.

Answer

If you like pastries then eat some pastries on your eating days. I just wouldn’t over indulge as with anything. I find with fasting that I don’t crave sweets as much and tend to crave protein and vegetables. I’ll have my small portions of junk food but only as a reminder of what they taste like and I’m done.

I do three types of days - fast, feed and feast.

On a fasting day, I don’t eat.

On a feeding day, I generally eat in a six hour window, and focus on eating things that taste good but also fuel my body well - for me that’s low carb, range of veg, lots of protein, fat as needed.

On a feast day (birthday, celebrations, holidays) I eat to celebrate life and have joy - I eat all things I usually don’t, and eat at any and all hours.

Answer

Cereal. I love Special K vanilla and almond with whole milk. At least that’s what I’m craving now but my diet is pretty broad.

Diet is what you eat. The concept of being on a diet is highly flawed, the definition should be “executing an unsustainable eating habit”. What I focus on is cleaning my diet while making sure it support my goals. For instance if I stop fasting I probably going to switch from whole milk to skim :(

If I’m not extended fasting, I’m doing OMAD or IF with a caloric deficit to stay in line of my goal of cutting weight. Fasting just expedites the weight loss process, but in the end of the day it’s all CICO.
